So many people told me during the county elections campaign that they didn’t want the 3 unitary configuration of Local Government Reorganisation.
It carves off South Norfolk 3 ways, pulls Hethersett, Little Melton and Bawburgh into Greater Norwich putting their village identities at risk and creating a much higher council tax demand.
While the other two unitaries are left with the largest cohort of elderly residents (adult social care costs), deprivation, and hundreds of miles of rural roads with very little income to support them.
The biggest business rate income generating areas would all be taken by Norwich.
While unitary councils can be of benefit to communities the governments choice of 3 for Norfolk is plainly wrong. It simply doesn’t meet the criteria it set either in number of residents, keeping district boundaries in place, creating equally financially stable unitaries and ease to set up.
Should we sit back and accept our fate or challenge it? You, the public, had no choice in this, and neither did we as a council. We were told it would happen and had to come up with the best way to divide the county up. 3 unitaries is not it. We put forward an option for 2 with 1 as an acceptable alternative. Never 3.
If it goes ahead we have to live with this decision for decades, at crippling costs to all of us.
We’ve analysed the data and know what this means, Norwich never proved the 3 was financially prudent, there are no figures to support this model, only the data our analysts produced which show it to be a dreadful decision.

“I do not take pleasure in watching the Prime Minister flounder. The country needs leadership, not another speech from a man who clearly knows something has gone badly wrong, but still can't explain why.

This is Labour’s real problem. It is not just Starmer - all the pretenders jostling for his job do not have the answers either, because they all believe the same things: more welfare, more state control, more borrowing, more regulation. They are busy arguing over who should drive the car, but the truth is they are all heading in the wrong direction. They have no vision for the future.

What we need is to get Britain working again. That is why I have proposed an alternative King’s Speech with a a clear plan to reward effort, cut the cost of government, secure our borders, rebuild industry and back families who do the right thing.

If Labour are serious about fixing the country they could do all of this tomorrow. Whether they have the bravery or the common sense to do that is a different matter.”
- Kemi Badenoch MP, Leader of the Conservative Party
