KEY FACTS ABOUT FIRE DAMAGE

A rapid response is key to minimising the damage caused by smoke contamination. There are some practical steps you can take to help the process. You should where possible, open doors and windows to help remove smoke odours. You should also look to keep room temperatures as low as possible and avoid putting the heating on. If you think that any wiring may have been affected by heat or water, please turn off the electricity.

Please do not use any electrical items where soot is evident or try to clean off any soot. Also, do not try to ventilate the room by using fans.

Our commitment to a rapid response time will minimise the effects of smoke damage. This helps us save and restore many items to their pre-incident condition.

Some items can be restored on site. For items that need to be removed for de-contamination, you should make an inventory detailing the make and model of each item. You should also note the condition of the items prior to the incident.

It's important that the type of smoke damage is correctly diagnosed. Our trained technicians can identify the many variants of smoke deposits and therefore undertake the correct course of action.

It is also important that we clearly identify the extent of the smoke damage. This will enable us to ensure that there is no consequential damage such as returning odours when the restoration is complete.

KEY FACTS ABOUT WATER AND FLOOD DAMAGE

Any number of events can cause water damage and all of them are impossible to predict. But with some practical steps you can take yourself, and a quick response from us, we can significantly minimise the extent of the damage.

If you have a leaking pipe, immediately turn the water off at the stopcock and drain the system. The stopcock is usually located under the kitchen sink. Do not turn on the central heating until the leak has been fixed and the system has been refilled.

In any event you should try to remove as much excess water as possible by using an aqua vac or towels, but please do not use a household vacuum to suck up water.

Clearly if the water is deep, call the fire brigade to have it pumped out. If water is running through light fittings, then turn off the power at the mains and call an electrician.

Try to remove any furniture from the affected area, but do not place outside. Saucers, tin foil, polystyrene blocks etc can be placed under wooden legs of furniture to prevent water being absorbed. Also, remove any rugs from fitted carpets as the colour may run. If the floor under carpets is polished wood or parquet then the carpets should be lifted. You should where possible, open as many doors and windows to help ventilate the property.

Finally, do not turn on any electrical appliances if you think they may have been affected by water.

THE DRYING PROCESS

The chart on the rightillustrates how drying takes place and gives approximate times for each stage of the process. The time taken to dry out a building thoroughly will vary and depends on several factors:
•The length of time the building has been exposed to water
•The amount of moisture that has been absorbed
•How deeply the walls and floors have been penetrated
•The types of materials used in construction
