Cities of London & Westminster is one of the UK's most active and dynamic Conservative Associations. As London's Premier League Association we support political campaigning across the capital. We hold regular networking and social events in central London.

Oxford Street changes from Monday 26 October. 🚧

The stretch from Orchard Street to Great Portland Street closes to cars, buses, taxis and bikes. Emergency vehicles can still use it, and the closure starts as temporary, with permanent changes planned for next year.

Westminster Council still has a long list of unanswered questions, including where the traffic will go, public safety, and access for people with additional needs.

🚌 Oxford Street goes traffic-free from Sunday night, and Westminster's Deputy Leader Cllr Tim Barnes told BBC London yesterday what residents and traders have been saying for months: the Mayor's scheme "feels rushed, under-resourced and slightly undercooked".

The Mayor's development corporation cut Westminster City Council out of the planning process. Things that should have been resolved by now haven't been, and people living north of Oxford Street are asking where the buses, taxis and deliveries will go.

🛡️ The 520 roles going at Westminster City Council are all non-frontline, and one in five are senior managers.

Cllr Paul Fisher, Cabinet Member for Value for Money and Finance, told BBC London News: "We will not see an impact to frontline services resulting from this." He was clear that difficult decisions lie ahead, because the council's funding from the Labour government is being cut by 50%.

💷 Westminster sends £8.8 billion a year to the government in income tax, stamp duty and business rates, and pays 10% of the Treasury's entire business rates bill. 800,000 people visit the city every day; 200,000 live here.

Cllr Paul Fisher, Cabinet Member for Value for Money and Finance, on BBC Radio London: lower council tax for residents has always been the deal for stewarding the business centre of the capital. The government wants to renege on it. "All I'm asking is a fair deal for Westminster's residents."
