The U.S. Embassy in London and our Consulates General in Belfast, Edinburgh, and Hamilton will be closed on Monday, October 12, 2026, to observe Columbus Day. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday, October 13.

In the aftermath of 9/11, the British people joined us in mourning. We received thousands of letters and mementos at our embassy from people across the UK, and those tributes bear witness to the strong friendship between our nations. We convened religious leaders, civil society, and government officials from across the UK, to deepen existing relationships and forge new ones, continuing our shared commitment to defend freedom of religion or belief around the world.

Today we mark 25 years since September 11, 2001, one of the darkest days in history. We remember and honor the victims who lost their lives on 9/11 and all those whose lives were forever changed that day.

Twenty-five years ago, the world changed forever as the United States was attacked on home soil. As America grieved, the United Kingdom mourned alongside us. We will always be thankful for the actions and friendship of our greatest ally in one of America’s darkest hours.
