Exciting news from Walthamstow Wetlands!

Last weekend, the Ringing Group tagged a nightingale during one of their bird ringing sessions - an amazing record for the Wetlands!

Nightingales are much-loved summer migrant birds, known for their beautiful, melodious song, but sadly their numbers are declining in the UK.

Although nightingales do breed further up the Lee Valley, this is the first sighting sighting at the Wetlands for 20 years, making this a particularly exciting record!

Bird ringing is a method used to study bird populations by capturing, marking, and releasing birds. This data provides valuable insights into population size and distribution, migration patterns, survival rates, habitat use and breeding success. By collecting and analysing bird ringing data, scientists can better understand bird ecology and inform conservation efforts.

🌿 Nature’s Reclamation Along the River Lea
An exhibition by artist Jaiminee Patel
📅 21st June – 13th September

Walthamstow Wetlands and the Walthamstow Pumphouse Museum are linked by London’s Victorian industrial revolution - once dominated by towering chimneys that managed the city’s water supply. Today, the labyrinth of water and steam engineering through the valley inspires Jaiminee Patel’s art, which show how the brick and iron of these industrial sites have yielded to the patina of nature, connecting art, history and ecology through her surreal landscapes and still life painting.

Explore **Nature’s Reclamation Along the River Lea**, a free exhibition at Walthamstow Wetlands, open daily from **Sunday 21 June to Sunday 13 September**.
