๐Ÿšจ AWARENESS: WHAT IS CUCKOOING? ๐Ÿšจ

Cuckooing is a form of exploitation where criminals target the homes of vulnerable people and use them as a base for criminal activity, often involving the supply and dealing of drugs.

The person whose home is being used may be isolated, vulnerable or experiencing difficulties, and can be pressured, threatened or manipulated into allowing others to take over their property.

The signs aren't always obvious.

You may notice:

๐Ÿ”ธ Different people regularly coming and going from a property
๐Ÿ”ธ Increased activity at unusual times
๐Ÿ”ธ People who don't appear to live at the address
๐Ÿ”ธ A sudden increase in visitors or unfamiliar vehicles
๐Ÿ”ธ People appearing to monitor or control who enters the property
๐Ÿ”ธ Someone who previously lived independently becoming isolated or withdrawn
๐Ÿ”ธ A property becoming associated with suspected drug activity

It is important to remember that the person living at the address may be a victim, not a willing participant.

If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it.

๐Ÿ“ž If you believe someone is in immediate danger, call 999.
๐Ÿ“ž To report concerns or suspected drug-related activity to Essex Police, call 101.
๐Ÿ“ž You can also make an anonymous report to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Cuckooing can happen in our communities, and recognising the signs could help protect someone from exploitation.

๐Ÿ‘€ See something? Say something.

โ›ต Sailing, connection and recovery โ›ต

A group of staff, volunteers and people using our Phoenix Essex services recently had the fantastic opportunity to enjoy an overnight sailing experience aboard the beautiful Pioneer.

Once again, the team at the Pioneer Sailing Trust provided incredible support, making sure everyone had the opportunity to get involved โ€” whether that meant learning the ropes, helping to sail the boat, working together as a crew or simply taking some time to relax and enjoy being out on the water. ๐ŸŒŠ

Experiences like this are about so much more than a day away. They provide opportunities to build confidence, try something new, connect with others, support wellbeing and create positive memories along the way.

And judging by the feedback, this one was definitely a success! ๐Ÿฉท

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œGreat fun to be out on the sea and being around people who are in recovery too. Enjoyed learning about the Pioneer boatโ€™s history and how to sail.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œIt was amazing as always. Being on the sea, with a great variety of personalities. I loved being able to choose whether to get involved with the sailing or just relax. I did a bit of everything. Also, I enjoyed refreshing my knowledge of how to sail the boat. The history of the boat is fascinating.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œI enjoyed it very much. Everyone was very nice and friendly. I learnt a little about being on a boat.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œWonderful. Absolutely brilliant. Amazing.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œPleasant, and one of the best times Iโ€™ve had. I got on well with everyone.โ€

A huge thank you to the Pioneer Sailing Trust for welcoming us aboard and creating another memorable experience for everyone involved. โ›ต๐Ÿฉท

๐Ÿ’œOur Social Inclusion Wickford Walking Group๐Ÿ’œ

Is on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month at 10am

Fridays walk saw five of us braving the weather, and luckily the rain stopped just in time. Our task was to spot birds from a checklist, although apparently a wooden owl didn't count! ๐Ÿฆ‰

One of the group suggested using the bird checklist as it can be helpful for people who feel anxious about coming along and talking straight away. Having something to focus on gives people a chance to be part of the group at their own pace, and he said it's something that really helps him when he's feeling anxious.

If you enjoy fresh air, meeting others, friendly conversations and gentle exercise, why not join our Wickford Walking Group?

Interested? Speak to your coordinator, call us on 01376 316126 and choose option 1, or email us on [email protected].
