Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia is ready to deepen partnerships with BRICS countries in minerals, renewable energy and industrial development as he participated in the 18th BRICS Summit in India.

Speaking under the summitโ€™s theme of "Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability," Prime Minister Abiy said BRICS countries possess capital, technology and markets that can be brought together to create greater value, including where resources are found.

He also called for stronger resilience in economic systems, responsible use of artificial intelligence to serve Africaโ€™s needs, predictable debt resolution and closer links between climate action and economic transformation.

The Prime Minister said BRICS has the potential to turn cooperation into shared value, resilience and sustainable growth.

Ethiopia became a full member of BRICS in January 2024, following the endorsement of its application at the 2023 BRICS Summit in South Africa.

This is more than a diplomatic milestone. Our BRICS membership strengthens Ethiopiaโ€™s strategic partnerships, advances our national interests and gives our country a stronger voice in international affairs.

BRICS brings together 11 member states, with cooperation spanning politics and security, economics and finance, and cultural and people-to-people exchange. Together, the bloc represents more than 45% of the worldโ€™s population and 35% of global GDP at purchasing power parity.

For Ethiopia, this opens important opportunities in investment, tourism, technology transfer, market access, infrastructure and development financing, and broader strategic cooperation.

Our membership has also strengthened our engagement on international issues, including support within BRICS for Ethiopiaโ€™s efforts toward WTO accession.

At the same time, Ethiopia is making progress toward membership in the New Development Bank, opening the way for alternative financing opportunities for national development, infrastructure and macroeconomic stability, while strengthening our links with South-South financial systems.

And the opportunity extends to our young people.

Ethiopian youth are participating in BRICS programmes covering entrepreneurship, education, healthcare, environmental protection, science and technology, creating opportunities for networking, knowledge transfer and institutional exchange.

The opportunity before us is significant.

Government institutions, the private sector, our youth and all citizens have a role to play in turning these expanding partnerships into investment, development, economic growth, employment and prosperity.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น BRICS is a new platform for Ethiopia. Let us make the most of it.

Ethiopia: A New Horizon of Hope.

๐Ÿ“ธ Moments from Ethiopiaโ€™s engagements at the 18th BRICS Summit โ€” advancing dialogue, partnerships and cooperation as the summit continues.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called for a more ambitious and mutually beneficial partnership between Ethiopia and India, following his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his official visit to India.

In a message following the meeting, Abiy said the two leaders exchanged views on strengthening bilateral relations, with discussions covering defence cooperation, technology transfer, capacity building, mining and collaboration towards COP32.

โ€œOur discussions focused on enhancing defence cooperation, technology transfer, capacity building, mining, and our partnership towards COP32,โ€ Prime Minister Abiy said.

The prime minister described the areas discussed as having significant potential to deepen practical cooperation between the two countries and generate new opportunities for their peoples.

He said Ethiopia and India are connected by deep historical ties, longstanding cultural links and strong people-to-people relations. However, he said that the existing relationship has yet to reach its full potential.

โ€œMuch of the potential between our two countries remains untapped,โ€ Prime Minister Abiy said, stressing the need to translate the two countriesโ€™ shared history and goodwill into a stronger and more results-oriented partnership.

According to the prime minister, the next phase of Ethiopia-India relations should be grounded in technology, skills, investment, sustainable development and stronger people-to-people ties.

His remarks point to an effort to broaden bilateral cooperation beyond longstanding diplomatic and cultural relations and place greater emphasis on practical economic, technological and strategic collaboration.

Defence cooperation and technology transfer were among the key areas highlighted in the discussions, alongside mining and capacity building. Climate cooperation was also identified as an important area of partnership as the two countries look towards COP32.

Prime Minister Abiy said the current moment presents an opportunity for Ethiopia and India to build on their historic relationship and develop a partnership capable of delivering greater benefits to both countries.

โ€œI believe the time is right to translate our shared history and goodwill into a more ambitious and mutually beneficial partnership,โ€ he said.

The meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi forms part of Prime Minister Abiyโ€™s official visit to India, underscoring the importance Ethiopia attaches to strengthening its engagement with one of Asiaโ€™s major economic and technological powers.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called on African leaders and young people to embrace technological sovereignty and shape the continentโ€™s digital future on its own terms, in a message marking African Union Day.

He highlighted Ethiopiaโ€™s longstanding role in Africaโ€™s continental journey, from the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to the African Union (AU), with Addis Ababa serving as the home of the continental organization. He reaffirmed Ethiopiaโ€™s commitment to the vision of an integrated and prosperous Africa.

Speaking in his capacity as the African Union Champion for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health, Prime Minister Abiy urged African leaders and youth to take ownership of the continentโ€™s technological future. The African Union endorsed his nomination to the role in February 2026.

The Prime Minister said Ethiopia stands ready to build that future alongside fellow African countries, linking technological sovereignty with Africaโ€™s broader pursuit of collective progress.

He concluded his message by wishing Africans a Happy African Union Day.
