Today is Battle of Britain Day, a day to remember the courage and sacrifice of everyone who stood up to N**i tyranny and defended Britain in its darkest hour.

Yet as we honour those who served, the stark inconsistency in how our veterans are treated is impossible to ignore.

Shrewsbury’s MP, Julia Buckley MP, backs the ongoing prosecution of Northern Ireland veterans and her blatant double standard was on full display last Sunday when she laid a wreath at the Battle of Britain Memorial, a move that sparked widespread condemnation from service attendees.

As one of our members bluntly put it: ‘If she had been around at the time, she would have supported Bomber Command aircrew being tried at Nuremberg.’

We will never stop standing up for the service personnel who stood firm for all of us.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝘅𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀.

Its latest survey also recorded a significant fall in the number of businesses reporting increasing sales, suggesting that confidence has weakened at a time when operating costs continue to rise.

For many employers, the challenge is no longer a single policy change. It is the cumulative effect of higher wages, increased National Insurance contributions, rising energy costs and additional regulation arriving over a relatively short period.

Many businesses remain resilient, but resilience should not be mistaken for the absence of pressure.

📄𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴.
They are felt in workshops, offices, cafés, farms, factories and high streets across the country. Every increase in employment costs, taxation or regulation eventually reaches the businesses that employ local people, support local suppliers and contribute to the prosperity of our communities.

Shropshire is no exception. Our county is home to thousands of independent businesses, family firms and skilled manufacturers. It has a proud tradition of engineering, agriculture, food production, hospitality and professional services. Together, these businesses create employment, invest in our communities and help sustain the local economy.

When costs continue to rise, the consequences are felt far beyond the balance sheet.

𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲. 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀.

Fuel duty is scheduled to rise by a cumulative 5 pence per litre between September 2026 and March 2027. For businesses running vans, delivery vehicles, or HGVs, that can add up to thousands each year.

Electricity prices remain among the highest in the developed world, and non-commodity costs like network charges and environmental levies make up a significant part of the bill.

For manufacturers, engineers, food producers, and hospitality businesses, energy has become a major cost.

When employment costs rise, recruitment plans are reconsidered. When operating costs rise, investment is delayed. When regulation becomes more complex, time goes to compliance instead of growth.

These decisions affect whether businesses expand, take on apprentices, replace equipment, or remain viable.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘄 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

It introduces new responsibilities for employers, including:

Statutory Sick Pay from the first day of absence
Expanded parental and bereavement leave rights
New protections for workers on zero-hours and low-hours contracts
Additional obligations when flexible working requests are refused
A reduction in the qualifying period for unfair dismissal claims from two years to six months from January 2027

These measures aim to strengthen employee rights, but they also increase administration, legal obligations, and potential tribunal exposure.

For larger organisations, these may be absorbed more easily. For many small and medium-sized businesses, they add another layer of cost and complexity.

𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀'𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲.

From April 2025, Employer National Insurance Contributions increased from 13.8% to 15%, while the threshold dropped from Â£9,100 to Â£5,000 per employee. The National Living Wage also rose to Â£12.21 per hour.

Individually, these may seem manageable. Combined, they represent one of the largest increases in employment costs in recent years.

The Employment Allowance did rise to Â£10,500, but it's quickly exhausted once you employ more than a handful of full-time staff.

In fact, the FSB estimates that combined 2025 and 2026 changes could add around Â£25,850 to annual employment costs for a typical nine-person business.

Unsurprisingly, many employers are reviewing recruitment plans, delaying expansion, or restructuring in response.
