In 1997, Steve Jobs returned to Apple. The company was weeks from bankruptcy. Microsoft held the dominant operating system. Everyone saw a dying company and a victorious rival.

Jobs saw something else.

He saw that Microsoft was dependent on Apple's survival. Without Apple, Microsoft would face antitrust action, losing its monopoly. Jobs did not see a defeat. He saw an architecture of mutual dependency.

He called Bill Gates. He asked for a $150 million investment. He demanded that Microsoft develop Office for the Mac. He walked away with the lifeline Apple needed.

What Jobs did was not prediction. It was not creativity. It was not intelligence.

It was something rarer: the ability to perceive the hidden architecture of a situation before it revealed its consequences to others.

We have been deceived.

Not by others. By ourselves.

We have believed that strategy is about making better decisions. We have believed that success flows from intelligence, analysis, and planning. We have believed that the future can be predicted, that options can be evaluated, that choices can be optimized.

These beliefs are not merely incomplete. They are fundamentally wrong.

Strategy is not about decisions. It is about perception.

Success is what you build. Enduring relevance is what you create.

What determines whether a successful individual or institution continues to matter when the circumstances that created its success begin to change?

It is a question that deserves deeper examination.

Markets evolve. Leadership changes. Competitors emerge. Institutions face new demands. Strategies that once delivered exceptional results can gradually lose their effectiveness. Yet some individuals retain their influence long after leaving positions of formal authority, while some institutions continue to thrive beyond the ambitions and personalities of their founders.

What explains this difference?

On 12 November 2026 in Lagos, Nigeria, I will lead the Strategic Elevation: Executive Experience 2026, a private Strategic Inquiry into the forces that determine why some people and institutions continue to matter long after the circumstances that created their success have changed.

Under the theme Beyond Success: The Architecture of Enduring Relevance, we will examine consequential questions of leadership, strategic positioning, institutional endurance and the foundations of lasting influence.

This is not a conventional conference built around speeches and presentations. It is an opportunity for accomplished leaders to examine important strategic questions, challenge familiar assumptions and reconsider their own organisations and positions through the Strategic Elevation Framework:

• Narrative Authority — Who defines the problem your organisation exists to solve, and whose interpretation shapes how others understand your role?

• Category Positioning — What game are you actually playing, where do you truly compete, and what distinguishes your position?

• Strategic Relevance — Why do you continue to matter, and what makes others need, value or depend on your contribution?

The inquiries will draw on two consequential cases: the Obasanjo Model, exploring the longevity of influence beyond formal authority, and the FCMB Model, examining the challenge of turning entrepreneurial ambition into an enduring institution.

Ultimately, however, the most important case in the room is not either of these examples. It is your own strategic reality.

Participation is by invitation only and limited to 83 individuals, with the intention of creating an environment for serious intellectual engagement across business, investment, public leadership, policy, diplomacy, academia and institution-building.

If you are interested in examining what sustains relevance beyond present success, I invite you to explore the experience and request an invitation.

An organisation can be full of talented people, hard work and good intentions—and still underperform.

Why?

Because effort alone does not guarantee progress.

When departments pursue conflicting priorities, inefficient processes become normal, and the market fails to recognise the value being offered, energy is lost where it should be creating results.

The answer is not always to do more. Sometimes, it is to remove what prevents your existing effort from producing its full value.

Strategic Elevation begins with seeing these hidden constraints and understanding how to address them.
