Today, the Acting High Commissioner visited Solent University, Southampton and Warsash Maritime School, gaining valuable insight into their advanced maritime education and training facilities, including sophisticated simulation, ship-handling, IoT and digitalisation.

The visit highlighted Warsash’s strong capabilities in preparing maritime professionals for a rapidly evolving industry, with particular emphasis on safety, technology, innovation and emerging maritime competencies. The School’s state-of-the-art facilities and extensive expertise can offer valuable opportunities for Bangladeshi students and maritime professionals to pursue advanced education, specialised training and professional development.

Discussions also explored avenues for strengthening institutional cooperation, including training of trainers, postgraduate education, knowledge exchange, joint research and collaboration with relevant maritime institutions in Bangladesh.

Acting High Commissioner Dr M Nazrul Islam received Dame Andrea Jenkyns, Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire and former UK Minister for Skills at the Department for Education, at the Bangladesh High Commission in London today. The Mayor personally invited the Acting High Commissioner to attend The Great Exhibition in Lincolnshire and highlighted Greater Lincolnshire’s economic strengths and growing international engagement. Their discussions explored opportunities for closer cooperation between Bangladesh and Greater Lincolnshire, particularly in trade and investment, agriculture and agri-tech, food processing, energy, defence and advanced technologies, ports and logistics, higher education and research, as well as broader business and institutional linkages.

Acting High Commissioner Dr M. Nazrul Islam and Mr John Virgoe, Senior Director, Governance and Peace Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat, held a courtesy meeting today at the Bangladesh High Commission in London. Advisor and Head of Asia Section Dr Dinusha Panditaratne of the Commonwealth Secretariat and Counsellor Mir Nurani Rupoma of the High Commission were also present.

The meeting focused on strengthening Bangladesh’s engagement with the Commonwealth, including preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), capacity-building programmes, sports cooperation, climate change challenges, and concerted efforts towards a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis.

Today, Chargé d’Affaires of Bangladesh to Ireland, Dr M. Nazrul Islam, attended the installation ceremony of the newly elected committee of the All Bangladeshi Association of Ireland (ABAI) as the Special Guest.

The ceremony was also graced by H.E. Catherine Ardagh, Minister of State for International Law, Law Reform and Youth Justice of Ireland, and Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee. A large number of Bangladesh-origin residents from across Ireland attended the event, creating a festive and vibrant atmosphere.

In his remarks, Dr Islam congratulated the newly elected committee and expressed confidence that it would represent the aspirations and interests of the Bangladeshi diaspora across Ireland. He commended the Association for its philanthropic and social initiatives for the benefit of the community and encouraged the new committee to continue strengthening community solidarity and engagement.

Dr Islam particularly underscored the importance of preserving Bangla language, culture and heritage among the younger generation. He encouraged parents and community leaders to inspire their children to learn Bangla and remain connected to their cultural roots, while also urging the community to integrate fully with Irish society and contribute to Ireland’s social and economic development through their talent, hard work and dedication.

Acting High Commissioner Dr M. Nazrul Islam addressed the British Foreign Policy Group’s “Diplomatic Hour” on Bangladesh–UK relations, discussing the way forward, future expectations and the Government’s priorities.

Chaired by BFPG Executive Chair David Landsman OBE, the roundtable was attended by Apsana Begum MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Bangladesh, and representatives from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), British Council, Chatham House, Transparency International UK, SOAS University of London, WaterAid, British Expertise International (BEI), Advance HE, Quay Asia Limited, Adam Smith International, Tetra Tech International Development and AQA Global Assessment Services, among others.

Held under the Chatham House Rule, the event enabled a candid and constructive exchange.

Acting High Commissioner Dr M Nazrul Islam visited Portsmouth International Port yesterday and met with Mike Sellers, Port Director, and Steve Williams, CEO of Portico, which operates the Port’s general cargo terminal. Discussions covered the Port’s ferry, cruise and general cargo operations, the Solent Freeport, which offers businesses simplified customs procedures and deferred import duties and taxes, increasing automation, and investment in shore power and lower-emission maritime operations.

The two sides also explored opportunities to strengthen trade and port connectivity between Bangladesh and Portsmouth, including improving cargo flows, reducing transit times and developing commercially viable shipping links for Bangladeshi exports to the UK and beyond via Portsmouth.

Acting High Commissioner Dr M. Nazrul Islam met with Cllr Abdul Kadir, Lord Mayor of Portsmouth today. Cllr Kadir is the 100th Lord Mayor of Portsmouth and currently the only serving Lord Mayor of Bangladeshi origin in the UK. Their discussions covered ways to translate the Portsmouth–Sylhet Sister City relationship into tangible outcomes, business engagement with Bangladesh, including a possible trade delegation to Bangladesh, exchange of good practices in local governance and administrative efficiency, social entrepreneurship, and Portsmouth’s vibrant start-up ecosystem.

As part of the visit, the Acting High Commissioner was also given a tour of the historic HMS Victory by personnel of the Royal Navy, highlighting Portsmouth’s rich maritime heritage.

Yesterday, Acting High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the UK, Dr M. Nazrul Islam, met with Mr Edwin Poots MLA, Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, at Parliament Buildings, Stormont.

The meeting focused on strengthening parliamentary exchanges and cooperation, sharing experiences on governance systems, promoting academic exchanges among universities, and enhancing collaboration within the framework of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

Dr Nazrul Islam highlighted Bangladesh’s skilled and dynamic human capital, growing economic potential, and emerging opportunities for deeper engagement, encouraging a broader understanding of Bangladesh beyond the traditional development narrative.

The discussion also covered the welfare, interests and aspirations of the Bangladeshi community in Northern Ireland, with both sides underscoring the importance of continued engagement and people-to-people connections.
