August saw the lowest number of small boat crossings of any August since records began in 2018, and the lowest number of migrant arrivals since 2020.

Crossings were down 46% compared with August 2025, while migrant arrivals fell by 35%.

Working closely with France, we are stepping up efforts to stop crossings before they begin and target the criminal gangs responsible.

Since July 2024, more than 48,000 crossing attempts have been prevented.

The National Crime Agency - NCA, working with international partners, has seized over 1,100 boats and engines used by criminal networks.

That's 61% of all small boat crossing events stopped during this period.

The summer months usually see higher levels of small boat activity.

But this year, crossings fell to their lowest fell to their lowest level for June, July and August since 2019.

The number of small boats arriving in August fell 46% compared with last year, while crossings were down 50% in June and 64% in July.

This follows our joint action with France, with more officers deployed on French beaches to stop crossings before they begin and target the criminal gangs behind them.

This action is beginning to bear fruit, but we know there is more to do. We will be relentless in targeting the criminal gangs behind these crossings.

John Walker's shoplifting spree in Bexhill has come to an end.

Over three months, Walker stole more than £900 worth of goods, including meat and alcohol, from a local shop – often targeting it several times a day.

When Sussex Police officers arrested him, he assaulted them and ripped a windscreen wiper from a nearby vehicle in an attempt to use it as a weapon.

He pleaded guilty to 18 offences, including theft, assaulting a constable, obstructing or resisting arrest and criminal damage.

Walker was jailed for four months and ordered to pay £1,378 in compensation.

Nearly 1,050 French officers have been deployed to stop small boat crossings.

This means around 200 extra officers have now been deployed in just four months – a 24% increase in law enforcement personnel.

From today, recognised victims on Skilled Worker visas can leave abusive employers and work elsewhere without risking their immigration status.
