Did you spot the Carnyx last night?

Standing over 2m tall, and topped with an animal's head, the Carnyx was an ancient Celtic war horn used more than 2,000 years ago to rally warriors and project sound across the battlefield. Today, this remarkable instrument is rarely seen, making it a truly unique addition to any performance.

Royal Air Force musicians have been opening The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo each evening with 'The Call' performed on the Carnyx, echoing the instrument's original purpose of calling people to gather 📣🏰

A special moment for AS1 Dias of RAF Music who met with the Honary Consul of Brazil in Glasgow before a performance at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. 🇧🇷 🇬🇧

“It’s been a very special experience to represent the RAF at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Finding other Brazilians performing here and having my own Brazilian heritage recognised has made it even more meaningful. It’s a great feeling to celebrate where I come from while being part of such an international festival”.

A wonderful celebration of heritage, music and international friendship. 🎶

📣 Meet AS1 Starling, the first RAF Music bursary student 📣

While studying for a music degree at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, AS1 Starling joined the Band of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force as a Reservist, and signed up to the RAF Music Bursary Scheme which helped to fund the final years of her degree 🤩

🎓Now, having graduated, she has transitioned into a full-time career with RAF Music becoming the first bursary student to successfully make the move from RAF Reserves to the Regulars.

🎶 Could you be next? If you're studying at a university or conservatoire and considering a career in music, the RAF Music Bursary Scheme could provide funding, experience and a direct route into life as an RAF musician!

🎶 Back where it all began, AS1 Savage returns to Edinburgh bringing her RAF Music career full circle!

🎓 This August marks 10 years since I began my degree at The University of Edinburgh, and 5 years since my graduation ceremony which took place in Edinburgh Castle.

During my time in Edinburgh, I joined the City of Edinburgh UOTC where I undertook Reserve Officer Cadet Training and became a member of their band. I played the bugle for the Remembrance Sunday Service held in the Old College, and also learnt to play the tenor drum. I attended Basel Tattoo and performed on stage in Aberdeen with Lewis Capaldi for BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
These experiences certainly shaped my decision to pursue a career in the Armed Forces and showed me what life as a musician could offer.

Now, 10 years on, it feels especially significant to be returning to Edinburgh performing in The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo with RAF Music, as I proudly reflect on the journey that began there 🤩
