Day1 of the The Blue Belt Symposium 2024

The Blue Belt is the UK Government’s flagship international marine conservation programme. In its 8th year the Blue Belt Programme works closely with and supports the UK Overseas Territories with the protection and sustainable management of their marine environments. The Overseas Territories are home to around 90% of the UK’s biodiversity.

In attendance from the BVI are Mervin Hastings Deputy Secretary, and Tessa Smith Assistant Secretary in the Ministry for Environment, Natural Resources & Climate Change and Tracy Bradshaw U.K./EU Representative in the BVI London Office.

The Rt Hon Lord Benyon Minister of State for Overseas Territories, Commonwealth, Energy, Climate and Environment of the United Kingdom opened the symposium with a message from His Majesty the King declaring the importance of marine environments in the Overseas Territories. The minister stated that “the UK Government has prioritised marine protection, and it is with thanks to the Overseas Territories hard work and leadership, that we are able to protect our oceans”

Delegates from across the UK and our Overseas Territory partners will join us in London and online from 26 – 28 February, as we reflect on the Programme's legacy and impact since 2016. 🙌

We'll also be exploring key priority areas for the future.

We’re looking forward to a very productive event featuring workshops, 🗣️ keynote addresses, 📊presentations and exhibitions. 🤝

2023-24 BVI-Asia Scholarship Applications Now Open

The BVI Hong Kong Office in partnership with the Ministry of Education announces the opening of 2023-24 Scholarship
Applications for BVI’s Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme.

The Asia Abroad Programme provides financial support to
eligible Virgin Islanders to pursue Bachelors, Masters, Doctoral, and language programmes at world class universities in
Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, and Taiwan. Students undertake studies in Computer Science, Information Technology,
Engineering, Environmental & Sustainable Development, Education, Media Studies, Tourism, Hospitality, Nursing,
Public Health, Public Administration, Public Policy, Chinese Language (Mandarin), and other available subjects of
necessity to BVI’s economy.

Awardees are eligible for a combination of tuition, housing, return flight tickets, and a living allowance based on eligibility, course of study, and availability of funds.

To apply, prospective persons will need to:
i. email a letter of interest including their Name, Age, Employment, Student Status, and Study Area to [email protected]
ii. as well as fully complete online University Applications to two (2) of our participating universities at http://www.bvihongkongoffice.com.hk/en/education-asia-study-abroad-scholarship-programme. Applications close Monday, February 15, 2023 (11:59 pm).

The Asia scholarship programme supplements the existing 30 year relationship between BVI’s Financial Services Sector
and the Asia-Pacifc. Virgin Islanders now have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the region through a wide
range of academic, professional, and cultural experiences. The scholarships are based on a three-way funding model
between partnering Asian universities, the BVI Government, and the private sector.
