Many breast cancer survivors whose treatment caused them to develop problems with their heart function can safely stop their medication after their heart recovers and most won't need to continue treatment long-term, according to a recent study.

The trial involved 90 women who had recovered from heart problems caused by a specific type of breast cancer treatment. Researchers found that 98% of the group who stopped taking their heart medication had no change in their heart function after one year, with only one woman experiencing a decline in her heart's pumping ability.

Professor Charlotte Manisty (pictured), Head of Clinical Cardiovascular Science at UCL, and consultant cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre and UCLH, said: "Our study provides the first evidence that heart failure therapies can be safely stopped in survivors whose hearts have recovered, with the support of ongoing close monitoring.

"We hope these findings will be encouraging for survivors and their doctors, giving hope for a future free from treatment."

UCLH clinicians are playing a leading role in a new UK clinical trial testing whether an experimental drug can make cutting-edge blood cancer treatments safer and more accessible for thousands of patients with multiple myeloma.

The study aims to prevent Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS), a potentially serious immune reaction that can occur after treatment. Researchers hope this could help more patients access life-saving therapies safely and closer to home.

Professor Rakesh Popat (pictured), consultant haematologist at UCLH, is co-chief investigator on the trial. He said: “This study addresses an important question, whether patients can safely receive bispecific antibodies, particularly when they are dosed outside of hospital.

"While CRS in the most part is manageable, it leads to increased use of hospital resources and a higher burden of treatment on patients by the need for close monitoring and administration of treatment once it occurs. Having an oral preventative treatment can help reduce this and make the treatment easier for patients.”

The first use of artificial intelligence to support a neurosurgeon in real time during live surgery has protected the sight of a man having a brain tumour removed.

Rhys (pictured right), aged 48 from Bedfordshire, is the first patient to have surgery in this way. Without surgery, Rhys’ tumour would have continued to threaten his sight and could ultimately have led to blindness. The operation successfully removed the tumour and protected his vision.

The operation was carried out at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), UCLH, as part of a clinical trial using AI technology developed in-house at UCL

Rhys said learning and research is very important to him and described the experience as “fitting” for a hospital with a long record of medical innovation.

“The NHNN was founded in 1859… and was the world's first dedicated neurosurgical hospital. So to me, it seems very fitting that the same hospital should also be the world's first to carry out an AI‑assisted neurosurgery.

“I'm very pleased to have had the opportunity to be cared for in the hospital… I'm also very humbled to have been asked if I'll be prepared to be the world's first patient in this research.”

A new treatment for early-stage re**al could transform the way patients are treated for the disease, according to the results of a landmark trial co-led by a UCLH surgeon.

Professor Simon Bach (pictured), a consultant colore**al surgeon who recently joined UCLH from University Hospitals Birmingham was the co-chief investigator of the STAR-TREC trial.

He has now moved to UCLH and UCL where he plans to develop a national centre of excellence to deliver this treatment for patients around London and train clinical teams in other parts of the country using the learning from this trial and others.

An international Phase 3 trial, led in the UK by UCLH, has reported positive early results for a personalised mRNA treatment designed to stop high-risk melanoma returning after surgery.

The INTerpath-001 trial is testing a treatment called intismeran autogene, also known as V940, in combination with the immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab.

Unlike conventional treatments, intismeran is made individually for each patient. Scientists analyse a sample of the patient's tumour and use its unique genetic features to create an mRNA treatment designed to help their immune system recognise and attack their cancer.

The trial sponsors, MSD and Moderna, have announced that the study met its main goal. Patients receiving the personalised treatment alongside pembrolizumab went significantly longer without their melanoma returning than those receiving pembrolizumab alone. The combination also significantly delayed the cancer spreading to other parts of the body.

UCLH consultant medical oncologist Heather Shaw coordinated the UK recruitment to the trial, and UK centres went on to recruit nearly 5% of all participants in the global Phase 3 trial. Cancer research at UCLH is led and delivered by first-class teams in clinical and research infrastructure and facilities which benefit from underlying support from the National Institute for Health and Care Research.

Full results, including the size of the benefit, will be presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress in October.

New research from UCLH radiologists suggests that prostate cancer in some men can be identified from an MRI scan with a very high degree of confidence, potentially reducing the need for a biopsy before treatment begins.

Radiologists identified a subset of patients in whom they were ‘99% sure’ there was tumour. Every one of these patients (69/69, 100%) turned out to have clinically significant on biopsy. This has raised the possibility that some men could be offered treatment without first undergoing a biopsy.

Biopsy remains the standard way of confirming a prostate cancer diagnosis, but it is an invasive procedure that carries a small risk of infection, urinary problems and other side effects, and can occasionally miss a tumour that is present. Reducing reliance on biopsy could mean faster access to treatment and less discomfort and anxiety for patients, without compromising safety.

UCLH consultant radiologist Alex Kirkham said: “For a number of cancers, we already treat patients on the strength of imaging alone, without putting them through an invasive biopsy first. This study suggests prostate cancer could, in some cases, join that list.

"If we can confirm these findings in larger, multi-centre studies, it could mean some men reach treatment faster and avoid a procedure that, while generally safe, is not without risk or discomfort."
