Destined to be… The recent visit from Hartwig Fischer, the former director of the British Museum and now a founding director of the new mega museum in Riyadh, was a profound honor. His recognition of Sir Frank Bowling in my work underscores the depth of influence these esteemed figures have had on my artistic journey. Frank Bowling, who became my artistic father since he first visited my Camden Town studio in 1996, has profoundly shaped my creativity and personal life, even standing in for my late father at my wedding. Additionally, the late Professor Ben Enwonwu, under whom I apprenticed for three years in the 80s, played a pivotal role in my development. These remarkable men guided me through my darkest times, including struggles with addiction and homelessness, helping to hone my craft and resilience. Their esteem for my work not only highlights their influence but also reaffirms the honor I feel in my artistic path.

“HOPE” painted this piece in 1989-1993 encapsulates a pivotal moment in my life—an awakening to identity and purpose. It reflects a profound realisation of my true self as an artist, bridging the gap between personal pain and universal truth. I hope this piece resonates with anyone who has faced adversity, offering a message that despite turmoil, there exists a pathway to healing and fulfillment.

Divine Inspiration- Art is A gift from God
By connecting to a Supreme Higher Authority, has permeates this piece of work. There is a divine orchestration evident in the way the colors and forms interact, when I am painting, suggesting to me that this creation is not merely a reflection of personal experience but a manifestation of a greater artistic vision, that’s beyond me. This divine influence reinforces the idea that art can serve as a vessel for salvation, which has allowed me to channel my deepest emotions into something transcendent.

Ultimately, this painting “HOPE” stands as a beacon of resilience, a reminder for me, that even in the darkest moments, there is a flicker of light waiting to be ignited. It speaks to the power of art as a means of liberation, transforming pain into beauty and despair into purpose. This piece is to invite viewers to reflect on their own journeys, inspiring them to find their own sources of hope amidst life’s challenges.

Sir Frank Bowling OBE and the late Professor Ben Enwonwu are two legends who profoundly influenced my life. They taught me to embrace my true self, and since then, my life has transformed in ways I could never have imagined.

I spent three invaluable years with Professor Enwonwu at his home in Fellows Road, Belsize Park, before he returned to Nigeria in the late ‘80s. Shortly after, Sir Frank Bowling visited my studio in Camden Town and became a pivotal figure in my journey. He was the first person to recognize my potential as an artist, and his encouragement, alongside the introduction to the Chelsea Arts Club, ignited my passion further. I fondly remember my time in New York with him, where I also had the privilege of meeting the late Ed Clark, another remarkable artist who left a lasting impression on me.

Having such esteemed mentors by my side was truly a blessing during my formative years. I also met Spencer through Sir Frank in 1995/96, and he has been a father figure to me, especially on my wedding day. His presence has always meant so much.

With the support of these incredible individuals, I’ve never looked back. I am deeply grateful for their guidance and belief in me. 🙏🏾
