Berrylands Nature Reserve

Berrylands Nature Reserve Nestled in the heart of Berrylands is a forgotten five-hectare nature reserve & this project aims to revitalise it back to a thriving local nature reserve!

This is an amazing opportunity for the local community to be involved with transforming a relatively neglected local green space into an even more biodiverse local site which is accessible for everyone to visit and learn from. Berrylands Nature Reserve is officially recorded as being called Raeburn Open Space Local Nature Reserve (LNR) and was declared an LNR by Natural England in 1992. A refreshing cup of tea / coffee in the shade after a successful session Berrylands Nature Reserve - and a warm welcome to Max, great work by all.
Two activities today where the stone fruit trees ( cherries, plums, damsons etc ) were summer pruned in the Berrylands Park and Green Lanes community . Photos 2 and 3 - before and after, Photos 4 and 5 again before and after
In addition, Celia and Max donned the waders to clear and encroaching Bramble from the Tolworth Brook between Meldone Close and Stirling Walk
Next session Tuesday 25th August meet 10:15 / 10:30 by the Scout Hut in Stirling Walk - all welcome

Berrylands Nature Reserve - 1st photo - empty on 26th July 26 , refilled on 28th July to top water level,

2nd and 3rd photos taken today 6th Aug at 12:00 hrs - note the reduction in water level by approx 30 cms ( evaporation with effectively zero rainfall )

Zoom in on photo 2 to see the wet clay tide mark on the left of the photo - level decline over 9 days - an effective marker for the current drought conditions with yet another heat wave forecast for next week. 😢😢

Approximately 7 weeks ( 6th June 26 - 28th July ) between Photo 1 and Photo 5 where the had evaporated to dryness - refilled by our industrious pumping from the Tolworth Brook.
Photo 3 taken on 26th July 2026 with the Waterlily providing much need cover from the intense heat and sunshine

Always amazed what you find during a Balsam Bashing session along the Tolworth Brook which flows through the BNR
Thanks to Reuben for his assistance to secure the dislodged coping stone on the Berrylands Park bank and lift out the exercise bike which someone had dumped in the Brook.
Some gigantic Balsam plants found and removed but on a miniature scale Reuben spotted a newly emerge tiny froglet on the side of the pond
Small but industrious team also cleared pathways through the reserve

The high water level and torrential flow has flattened bankside reeds growing beside the river bank just upstream of the ford
Estimated a 1 meter increase in depth - This dramatic increase in depth and flow is typical of an urban river catchment where roads and concrete prevail

Top water level after refilling in photo 1 in 6th June - 22 days later Photo 2 - 28th the water level has declined by approx 30-40 cms though the Waterlily has grown well and producing flower buds

So pleased to report via a sequence of photos of today’s refilling of the pond with the fresh water pumped from the adjacent Tolworth Brook.
Pumping started at 11:05 am and after approx. 1hr 45mins of continuous steady pumping the Pond was refilled with the overflow operating as top water level at 12:48 pm
Great work by all and so satisfying to achieve our plans come to fruition.
