A Hobby fledgling looks down during its first days out of the nest 🪶🪹

Two Hobby chicks and three Sparrowhawk chicks have fledged their nests in the past few weeks, seen by our team and visitors to the Wood. These birds of prey are a sign of a healthy woodland ecosystem; Sparrowhawks help to regulate populations of smaller birds, while Hobbies catch dragonflies and other insects on the wing.

Although they may appear vulnerable as they make their first flights, their parents are usually close by, continuing to feed and protect them as they learn to survive independently.

Thank you to Mark Albini for these beautiful shots 📸

Help us keep you, other visitors and our Wood safe during this heatwave.

💧 Stay hydrated
🔥 Do not light any fires or BBQs - pack a picnic instead

Sparrowhawks heard in Highgate Wood!🪶

The audio heard here was captured on a Ranger's phone while he was working in the Wood last week.

He said: "I could hear two calls coming from different directions, which makes me wonder if it was a fledgling and parent. I could see one adult perched comfortably on a branch."

It's always wonderful to see wildlife thriving; the Wood provides the cover, nesting opportunities and plentiful food sources that sparrowhawks need. They play an important role in healthy ecosystems, helping to balance bird populations and reflecting the overall health of the habitats they live in.

The footage shown here is of Eurasian Sparrowhawks filmed in Norway, giving a clearer look at these hard-to-spot birds.

Now that you know what to listen and look out for, why not bring your binoculars or camera to the Wood? 👀📸

Remember to stay calm and quiet, and always give wildlife plenty of space🦔💚

When the photo is of more than trees🧐🌳

Beneath this woodland floor lies one of London’s most remarkable Roman archaeological sites! Nearly 2,000 years ago, this was a bustling pottery production centre, where kilns fired pots destined for Roman Londinium. Excavations uncovered the remains of at least ten kilns and more than 40,000 pottery fragments, revealing a thriving industry hidden beneath today’s peaceful Highgate Wood.

...or undergoing 'inosculation', as scientists call it 🤝🌳

Inosculation is a natural process where two trees weave and intertwine together. As branches or stems from two neighbouring trees rub against one another over time, the bark can wear away and expose the cambium, the living growth layer beneath.

If the cambia meet, they can fuse together and form a natural graft, just like the two hornbeams pictured here 💚

This connection can provide added structural support and may even allow the trees to share water and nutrients through their joined tissues. A remarkable example of how trees adapt and grow together in the woodland!

Come down to the Wood and try and spot an example of this! Make sure to tag us in your photos 👏📸

Amber Heat Health Alert & Increased Wildfire Risk 🚨

The Met Office has issued another Amber Heat Health Alert, starting tomorrow morning, 29 July. Remember to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and hats, and schedule activities for cooler times of day. For more information, please visit gov.uk/UKHSA/beat-the-heat.

The hot and dry conditions caused by this year's weather means even a small spark can quickly start a serious fire. Please help protect the Wood by:

🔥 Not lighting BBQs or campfires
🚭 Disposing of ci******es safely
🗑️ Taking litter home, especially glass bottles

Report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999 and our Duty Mobile on 07786 538932.

Thank you for helping keep our green spaces safe during this heatwave🌿🚒
