‘Unexpected water feature’ in Rushmere Pond, cleared this morning by our keepers.

We don’t need to point out that submerged e-bikes pose an environmental hazard and severe pollution risks. Their lithium-ion batteries and electronics can leak toxic chemicals into the water, potentially affecting water quality and endangering wildlife – not to mention damaging the bikes themselves.

They also present another issue that the charity has to spend time and money dealing with.

If you come across a dumped bike on the Commons, please either contact the Rangers Office ([email protected] or 020 8788 7655) or report it to fixmystreet.com.

🔥FIRE DESTROYS!🔥

HEATWAVE THIS WEEKEND - you know the drill! Please share this post, and tell your friends, family, children - anyone you know that might visit the Commons.......

🔥 NO BBQs. NO FIRES. 🔥
Please remember that we have a zero-tolerance policy on BBQs, campfires, and anything with a naked flame. If our staff see one, it will be put out immediately.

🔥CIGARETTES CAN CAUSE FIRES🔥
In hot, dry weather, a carelessley discarded cigarette butt can spark a blaze. Please don’t smoke on the Commons if you can avoid it. If you do, make sure the butt is fully out and taken away with you.

🔥DOGS AND HEAT🔥
One missed walk won’t hurt your dog. Do not leave them in a vehicle - a hot car can kill and and we won’t hesitate to break in to save them.

🔥These Commons aren’t just a green space – they are home to some of the rarest habitats in the UK and home to some very special wildlife. One careless moment could destroy them.

✅ No dropped ci******es
✅ No litter

☀️ HOT WEATHER WARNING FOR DOG OWNERS ☀️

Heatstroke in dogs is a life-threatening emergency and can happen far more quickly than you realise. Please think abou whether you need to walk your dog in extreme temperatures, and please don't leave them in ahot car, even with windows open the temperatures can get too hot in minutes.

🚨 Watch for warning signs:
• Excessive panting
• Bright red or very pale gums
• Heavy drooling or vomiting
• Lethargy, confusion or wobbling
• Collapse, tremors or seizures

If you suspect heatstroke:
✅ Move them into shade or somewhere cool
✅ Use cool or room-temperature water (never ice-cold)
✅ Don’t use damp towels - they can trap heat
✅ Use a fan if possible
✅ Offer small drinks of water
✅ Call your vet immediately

Need to help your dog cool down? Dogs may have a drink or cool off in ponds, but they must remain ON LEAD at all times.

Dogs left in vehicles can die. Our staff will either call the police or break into vehicles if necessary to get dogs to safety. Please think before you walk. One missed walk is far safer than one heatstroke emergency.

Paths improved and ready for the seasons ahead!
Take a look at these before and after snapshots showing the transformation of recently completed path improvements. Over recent weeks, tons of aggregate have been laid, levelled and rolled to improve access while protecting these sensitive habitats.

These improvements mean fewer muddy, uneven and waterlogged paths. While conditions are currently dry, the real benefit will be felt in the wetter months.

You may notice the new surface looks quite bright for now, but don’t worry. As with all freshly laid materials, the new paths will weather in naturally over time and blend into the landscape.

This work was made possible thanks to generous support from last year’s Big Give Christmas Appeal (raising nearly £17,000!), alongside generous contributions from the Elizabeth Frankland Moore and Star Foundation. Thank you!

Calling all dog walkers!

The team at WPCC is looking to better understand how people use Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath and Putney Lower Common when walking their dogs. Whether you visit every day or only occasionally, we would value your input.

The survey should take just a couple of minutes to complete, and the feedback will help us build a clearer picture of how the Commons are used and enjoyed by dog walkers. This will in turn help inform future planning for the Commons and allow us to continue developing better communication and engagement with the dog walking community.

It's International Dawn Chorus Day!

20 intrepid bird lovers joined our volunteer bird walk leader, Les Evans-Hill, at 5am this morning to experience the dawn chorus on the Commons. Volume up!

VISITOR INFORMATION - CHANGES TO ACCESS TO THE COMMONS

Following the recent spate of fly-tipping, the gate to the Commons on Windmill Road, near Parkside, will be locked at night - currently 9pm - and will reopen at 6am in the mornings. This will take effect from tonight.

The cost of clearing and disposing of the waste impacts expenditure on our important conservation work and ensuring the Commons are safe for all our visitors.

Together, we raised over £20,000 for improving habitats for wildlife on the Commons, making this our biggest Big Give ever. This incredible support will make a real difference for the habitats and wildlife that make the Commons such a special place.

We're thrilled to share that we have already reached our Big Give Fundraising target of £20,000 - with 24 hours of the appeal still to go!

A big thank you to everyone who has supported this campaign to help set up a new Wildlife Fund to support practical conservation actions across the Commons.

The Phantom Fly-Tipper Strikes Again...

This is the sorry sight the Commons woke up to this morning on Windmill Road - the contents of another overnight fly tip....

Thanks to our team - including CEO Colin Cooper - this waste has now been cleared. Given the size of the tip, containing large household waste items, it's taken several hours of manpower time and we now have to arrange disposal and waste collection - which in total costs the charity £150,000 a year.

This illegal activity not only costs us financially, but is potentially damaging to the Commons which are a Special Site of Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.

If anyone saw/heard anything, or possibly has any footage on local cameras, we'd be grateful if you could contact on us with details. Given the size of the flytip, it was likely to be some sort of tipper vehicle. Please e-mail [email protected] or call on 020 8788 7655.
