September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month. Swipe to learn the key symptoms of the five gynaecological cancers, so you know what to look out for.

You know your body better than anyone. Knowing what’s normal for you can help you spot when something changes.

Having any of these symptoms does not definitely mean you have cancer, but it’s important to get checked by a GP.

If your symptoms are caused by cancer, finding it early may mean it’s easier to treat.

From today, children and pregnant women can get their flu vaccinations ahead of winter.

Children aged 2 and 3 can get vaccinated at their GP surgery, while most school-aged children will be offered the vaccine at school.

Pregnant women can speak to their maternity team, GP practice or community pharmacy about getting vaccinated.

A record-breaking day of surgery at King George Hospital 👏

Teams at the Elective Surgical Hub completed 20 gallbladder, hernia and colorectal operations in a single day – beating their previous record of 19.

The patients treated had experienced waits of up to 40 weeks for surgery. Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust bring together theatre, ward and admin teams for high-volume surgical days, which help work through the general surgery waiting list faster and get more patients the care they need sooner. 💙

In February 2025, Aimee went to A&E struggling to breathe. She was diagnosed with pneumonia, and a CT scan revealed lung abnormalities, but tests were postponed when she discovered she was three weeks pregnant.

Her condition worsened over the following months, and at 24 weeks and five days pregnant, Aimee went into premature labour. Her daughter, Jessica, was delivered and rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit.

Days later, Aimee suffered a cardiac arrest. She was resuscitated, placed on life-support, and added to the urgent transplant list at Royal Papworth Hospital. Soon after, thanks to an organ donation, she received a double lung transplant.

Recovery brought its own battles: Aimee’s new lungs initially struggled to provide enough oxygen, and she was fitted with a tracheostomy, leaving her unable to speak. Genetic testing revealed she carries a gene variant thought to be triggered by pneumonia, which contributed to her rapid decline.

‘At one point, I couldn’t even lift my arms, I could only move my eyes. It was very scary - I felt completely lost.’

A turning point came when the critical care nurses arranged for baby Jessica to be brought over in her incubator for their first cuddle. Until then, Aimee had only seen photos of her daughter.

‘That first moment meant everything. The nurses did my hair, helped me into a chair, and I had my first cuddle with Jessica. It gave me the motivation to keep going’

In December 2025, Aimee and Jessica were finally home together in time for Christmas.

‘The care we received was just incredible. Even in the scariest moments, I always felt I was in safe hands and completely trusted the team.’

Aimee and Jessica were also supported by NHS teams across the country throughout their journey, with Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust all contributing to their care.

Cervical screening is one of the best ways to protect yourself from cervical cancer, so it’s important to take up your invitation when it arrives.

If you’ve missed your cervical screening, the NHS may invite you to take an HPV self-test instead. If invited, you can order a kit, take your sample at home or somewhere private, and return it free by post.

You can’t opt in to HPV self-testing – if you’re eligible, the NHS will contact you.
