Did you know we were the first air ambulance in the UK to carry blood on board?

When someone suffers major blood loss, every minute matters. Losing a significant amount of blood can cause blood pressure to fall and reduce the amount of oxygen reaching vital organs.

Thatā€™s why our doctors and paramedics carry blood with them, allowing them to treat life-threatening blood loss at the scene, before a patient reaches hospital. We are the only team able to administer a blood transfusion on scene in London, bringing hope to our patients today, tomorrow, always.

John Power, our Chief Fire Officer, has been with the service for over 30 years. As part of our Fire Crew, he is responsible for fire prevention at the helipad, along with manning the operations room, providing health, safety and first aid for the helipad, escorting and educating visitors, and so much more.

John and his team are integral to the running of our service, allowing our advanced trauma team to get to patients across London, when they need us most, where they need us most.

Our helicopters are designed to take the hospital to the patient, rather than the patient to the hospital. On board, we carry all the equipment we need to provide hospital-level interventions on the roadside. These interventions can stabilise our patients, giving them time to reach hospital for further treatment.

Today is Restart a Heart Day, which aims to raise awareness of cardiac arrest and the importance of learning CPR.

The term ā€˜cardiac arrestā€™ describes what happens when the heart suddenly stops working. When this happens, blood stops being circulated to vital organs, including the brain. Our new ECAT Team helps patients who suffer from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, through innovative interventions such as ECMO.

But our team has the best chance of helping a patient if bystanders have given the patient CPR. This Restart a Heart Day, we encourage you to take 15 minutes to learn how to give effective CPR, by clicking the link in our comments.

Please join us in congratulating Dr Chrissie Hymers on her recent appointment to Lead Clinician.

Chrissie first joined Londonā€™s Air Ambulance as a HEMS Fellow in 2012 and became a HEMS Consultant in 2018. Since then, sheā€™s taken on a range of clinical and leadership roles, helping drive innovation in pre-hospital emergency care while building a career alongside the people and patients at the heart of our service.
