Artificial intelligence was in the spotlight in the Lords last week as the Archbishop of Canterbury led a debate on its impact on human relationships and society.

Opening the discussion, the Archbishop said:

‘Above all, we need to ensure that AI is being designed, built, regulated and used to serve our glorious humanity and not to diminish it—to be pro-human.’

Find out what’s coming up this week in the House of Lords:

❓ Lords members quiz the government on the shortage of affordable housing for young people, use of electric bikes and scooters on roads, assessment of the 56-day move-on period pilot for those granted refugee status, and tackling antisemitism in the UK.

📃 In bills, the Lords will debate the main purpose and key themes of the Financial Services and Markets Bill, and the Commercial Payments Bill.

🗣️ In debates, members will discuss five committee reports, and three debates are set to take place on welfare and youth unemployment, the rural economy, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

📝 In committees, the Built Environment Committee will speak to Stephanie Peacock MP, Minister for Sport, Tourism, Civil Society and Youth, as part of its inquiry into Young People and the Built Environment. Also, looking into fiscal devolution in England, the Economic Affairs Committee will speak to George Osborne, Former Chancellor of the Exchequer at HM Treasury.
