Former CIA Director General David Petraeus gave a Lord Speaker's Lecture on Ukraine, NATO and the changing face of warfare last week.

The Lord Speaker's Lecture series invites speakers from inside and outside the House of Lords to address members on a range of topics to support and inform their work.

General David H. Petraeus is a retired four-star general who served 37 years in the US military, becoming the best-known commander in George W Bush’s “war on terror,” leading coalition forces in Iraq during the “surge” of 2007-8 and in Afghanistan in 2010-11, before going on to serve as Director of the CIA.

Find out what’s coming up this week in the House of Lords:

❓ Lords members quiz the government on funding cuts to creative arts in universities, the cost of No.10 North, agency medical staff in the NHS, and the government defence budget.

📃 In bills, further scrutiny of the Financial Services and Markets Bill begins, and detailed line-by-line scrutiny of the Cyber Security and Resilience (Network and Information Systems) Bill, Armed Forces Bill, and the Railways Bill is also scheduled.

🗣️ In debates, members discuss the UK's fiscal outlook, home ownership, and the use of patient data for research.

📝 In committees, the National Resilience Committee will hear from Louise Sandher-Jones MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces. Also, the Environment and Climate Change Committee will hear from leaders at the Office for Environmental Protection.

Find out what’s coming up this week in the House of Lords:

❓ Lords members press the government on the impact of tax measures since July 2024, electoral finance law investigations, the impact of data centres on water resources, and compulsory voting.

📃 In bills, the Lords will debate the main purpose and key themes of the Public Office (Accountability) Bill, and conduct detailed line-by-line scrutiny of the Cyber Security and Resilience (Network and Information Systems) Bill and Armed Forces Bill. Members will also 'tidy up' the Social Housing Bill.

🗣️ In debates, members will discuss education for disadvantaged communities, government priorities and parcel delivery services. On Friday, the Lords will debate recent committee reports.

📝 In committees, the Built Environment Committee will hear from Matthew Pennycook MP, Minister of State for Housing and Planning for its inquiry into new towns. Also, the Constitution Committee will hear from Lord O'Donnell, former Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service, for its inquiry into the UK’s constitutional safeguards.
