UK writer and journalist, Tim Ecott, publishes new book about the Faroe Islands

Eva and the Island is the latest publication by acclaimed UK writer and journalist, Tim Ecott, which was released in the UK last week by Icon Books. Its subject is the island of Stóra Dímun, the smallest of the inhabited islands in the Faroes, where Tim has been a regular visitor over the years, spending time working on the island’s only farm together with eighth generation farmer Eva and her husband Jógvan Jón.

In his new book, described as a marvel of quiet reflection and keen observation, Tim Ecott immerses the reader in a remarkable way of living; one where you're isolated but never truly alone, surrounded by wildlife and an ever-changing landscape, as the farmers proudly continue the work begun by their forebears hundreds of years ago.

The Head of the Representation of the Faroe Islands to the UK, Kate Sanderson, had the honour of attending the book launch in Tim’s home village of Cuddington last Thursday, where she also had the chance to say a few words. She thanked Tim for his enduring interest in the Faroe Islands, and for combining his perceptive observations with his impeccable writing skills to share his insights into all things Faroese with a wide international audience.

Tim Ecott’s first book about the Faroes Islands, “The Land of Maybe – a Faroe Islands Year”, was published in 2020 by Short Books (UK). In 2024, Tim published a retelling of the old Norse “Saga of the Faroe Islanders” entitled "Sigmundur and the Golden Ring” (Sprotin, Faroe Islands).

Faroe Islands attend Education World Forum in London for the first time

Newly appointed Minister of Children, Education, Research and Culture, Bárður á Lakjuni, attended the Education World Forum in London this week. Providing an excellent opportunity to engage with ministers and education experts from around the world, Minister á Lakjuni also met with his counterparts in the UK, including Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson and Minister of State for Skills, Baroness Smith of Malvern, as well as Northern Ireland’s Education Minister, Paul Givan.

With Peace, Planet, Purpose and Pathways as overarching themes, much of the Forum’s discussions focussed on AI in education and the importance of both foundational learning and the key role of educators in ensuring responsible and effective use of AI tools in teaching and learning.

Faroe Islands represented at successful European Writer’s Festival # 3 in London

Faroese writer Marjun Syderbø Kjælnes took part in an engaging panel at the British Library on Sunday, together with Liliana Corobca from Moldova/Romania and Italian speaking Fabio Andina from Switzerland. Their discussion was expertly moderated by presenter and broadcaster Bidisha, with “personal histories” as its theme. 26 very diverse European countries were represented at this year’s well-attended edition of EWF, filling the British Library’s Pigott Theatre all weekend. Congratulations to the organisers, EUNIC London, who have worked in partnership with the British Library and the European Literature Network, with Rosie Goldsmith as chair of the programming panel. In addition to contributions from all participating EUNIC members, the festival is also supported by the EU Delegation to the UK and the European Parliament Liaison Office in the UK. It is a pleasure working with you all! ; EUNIC London; British Library; ; . Thanks also to FarLit for their cooperation and support 🇫🇴🇫🇴
