‼️ Be Well is unwell ‼️

Workers across Tower Hamlets' leisure centres have been striking amid serious concerns about how the service is being run.

Staff have reported 80-hour weeks, zero-hours contracts, months-long delays to wages, chronic understaffing and constant turnover in leadership, with worrying consequences for safety and hygiene in our pools and gyms.

These are services residents rely on, and the people keeping them running deserve decent conditions, fair treatment and proper support.

Tower Hamlets Labour stands in solidarity with striking Be Well workers.

Ravenscroft Park sports pitch is the latest in a list of community spaces that the council wants to commercialise.

Two weeks ago, the government approved plans for offices, homes and a data centre on Brick Lane - overturning the unanimous rejection by Tower Hamlets councillors of all parties, including Labour, at committee in July 2025.

Having listened carefully to all perspectives, we as the Tower Hamlets Labour Group continue to stand firmly against a data centre in the most densely populated borough in London.

We understand the urgent need for economic growth, and the role AI has to play in it. But data centres are loud, and extraordinarily demanding on water and energy: the proposed site alone would draw as much power as thousands of homes. Even within central London, there are far more appropriate locations than a street at the heart of a residential community in Spitalfields & Banglatown.

As Labour Group Leader in Tower Hamlets, I hope to open a meaningful and respectful discussion with government and the developers that puts the lives of local residents back at the centre of this decision.

Nine blocks. Hundreds of residents. Some without a reliable water supply for the best part of a year.

This is happening on the Devons Road estate, and the landlord, Poplar Harca, has known about it since December. Families with young children and residents with serious health needs have been living like this through a run of summer heatwaves.

Water has now been restored in some parts of the estate, but this is not one ward’s problem. Tower Hamlets Labour councillors are raising this together and pushing for a proper fix, not another round of delay.

Tower Hamlets is strengthened by the diversity of our communities and by the spirit of togetherness that we see across our borough throughout the year.

Tower Hamlets Labour Group is calling on Abul Monsur to resign from Tower Hamlets Council with immediate effect.

The posts uncovered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service Tower Hamlets Slice are not a lapse in judgement; they reveal a sustained record of Holocaust denial, antisemitic conspiracy theories, and apparent admiration for Adolf Hi**er. No apology makes that acceptable.

No seat on this council should be held by someone who has promoted that content.

At this evening’s Council AGM, Mayor Lutfur Rahman and the Aspire Group confirmed that he is not suspended from their party or group - it is outrageous that they would want to welcome someone with these views into their group.

Antisemitism has no place in Tower Hamlets, no place in our politics, and no place in our council chamber.

Aspire suspends councillor candidate Abul Monsur over antisemitic social media posts, including comments on Holocaust denial.
