UCL Students Horseracing Society Welcome to the brand new UCL Students Horseracing Society! We aim to provide an inexpensive, social BRAND NEW FOR 2011! Why not give it a try?

A dedicated Horse Racing Society for UCL Students! The UCL horseracing Society is a new group aimed at UCL students, attracting people like YOU to the exciting and unpredictable sport of Horseracing. We aim to provide an inexpensive, social and fun introduction to racing, with opportunities of meeting new people, seeing new places, and gaining an interest that could stick with you for life. Racing

has often been seen as an expensive and exclusive sport but this society aims to avoid that image. Members will receive discounted entry to racecourses, betting vouchers as well as other deals in the pipeline! We will be organising trips to racecourses within the local area and social events throughout the year, so there is plenty to get involved with! The society is currently *unofficial* in that it has not yet received backing from the UCLU, but we are awaiting a decision in March 2011. This does not affect the activities of the society, as we will still be organising trips to the racecourses in the London area and won't stop us from having a few drinks in the Union when we return with all our winnings!

This Friday (23rd Nov) it is free for 100 students up at Haydock and £10 for students at Ascot (see lovetheraces.com for deets). Next Thursday (29th) is free for students at Newbury.

The UCLU have finally got back to us about our proposed society. Unfortunately it won't be affiliated. We have fought long and hard to get a society up and running but we haven't been able to change the Union's pre-conceptions about horse racing. They still maintain that it is 'too expensive', despite us finding student offers and taking parties of 35 students to the likes of Ascot.

The latest on the UCL Students Horseracing Society is that we are still pending affiliation with the UCLU. We are hoping to organize a big day out at the races after exams finish in June, possibly in conjunction with a few other unis. Watch this space!

Well done to 23-year-old Rosie Napravnik, who was only the sixth female jockey to ride in the Kentucky Derby, who finished in 9th place yesterday.

They didn't win, but women made a step forward in the Kentucky Derby record books Saturday with a female jockey making a 9th place finish and trainer Kathy Ritvo's horse edging into the money to show.

Looks like Kauto Star is near retirement after a poor showing in Ireland this week. What a champion.
