Imperial College Healthcare is an NHS Trust and Academic Health Science Centre in London, England. The Trust manages five hospitals: Charing Cross Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital, St Mary's Hospital and Western Eye Hospital. The Trust is one of the largest in England and has an annual turnover of £800 million, treating more than a million patients a year. The Trust's chief executive is Professor Tim Orchard. Attention all staff! Next week is Quality Improvement Week 2026 📅

From Monday 14 to Friday 18 September, we'll be celebrating the incredible improvement work taking place across the Trust and helping colleagues take their next step in improvement, wherever they are on their journey.

This year's national theme, Improvement is for everyone, reflects our local approach through Improvement for All: building learning, improvement and innovation into everything we do. We recognise that continually improving our services, systems and ways of working helps us deliver even better care for our patients, communities and each other.

Whether you're leading an improvement project, have an idea you'd like to develop, or simply want to learn more, there are lots of ways to get involved. Radamir recently completed a 10-week medical elective with iCARE, a team that helps make sure health data is used safely and securely to support research and patient care across our Trust and Imperial College London.

During his placement, Radamir explored the steps that digital health tools need to go through before they can be used safely with patients. He developed a framework to map this process and applied it to an AI tool currently being developed at iCARE.

Radamir shared: "The experience gave me valuable insight into how health data is used securely and how AI tools are assessed before they can be used in healthcare.

"Beyond the project itself, I gained a deeper understanding of how doctors, data scientists and engineers work together to develop technology that is safe, effective and trusted.

"I'm incredibly grateful to Kelsey Flott, Erik Mayer and the whole iCARE team for their support and guidance throughout the placement. It has been the most valuable ten weeks of my degree so far."

Today we're celebrating World Radiotherapy Awareness Day, recognising a field of medicine in which our Trust has helped shape history and continues to drive innovation.

Professor Julian Redhead, chief executive, said: “The story of modern radiotherapy is, in part, a story that began at Hammersmith Hospital. The world's first treatment using a dedicated clinical linear accelerator marked a turning point in cancer care. Today, more than 70 years later, that same spirit of innovation continues across our Trust as we embrace new technologies, research and approaches that enable us to deliver ever more precise, personalised treatment for patients.

“World Radiotherapy Awareness Day is an opportunity to celebrate how far radiotherapy has come and recognise the clinical oncologists, medical physicists, therapeutic radiographers, nurses, scientists, researchers and patients whose contributions continue to improve outcomes with radiotherapy for people with cancer around the world."

Suod Al Hammad recently completed an elective in general and trauma surgery at St Mary’s Hospital, where he had the opportunity to learn from leading trauma surgeon Maryam Alfa-Wali, who you might recognise from Netflix’s Critical: Between Life and Death.

Suod, who is from the Kingdom of Bahrain, shared: “The experience provided me with valuable firsthand exposure to a major trauma and emergency hospital. I had the opportunity to observe a wide range of surgical procedures, attend multidisciplinary trauma team (MDT) meetings, and participate in morning rounds across the A&E department and surgical wards.

“Beyond the clinical exposure, this elective gave me a deeper appreciation of the importance of teamwork, communication, rapid decision-making, and coordinated multidisciplinary care in managing complex surgical and trauma patients.

“I am incredibly grateful to Maryam Alfa-Wali and the entire team at St Mary’s for their teaching, guidance, and generosity throughout the elective. This experience has been both professionally enriching and personally inspiring, and I look forward to carrying these lessons forward in my medical journey.”
