Labour keeps telling us it's "working people" they're protecting.

Unfortunately, somebody forgot to tell the people who actually employ them.

Take a bakery in Walthamstow for example: business rates up by an eye-watering 219%. Staff costs up 16% thanks to higher minimum wages and employer National Insurance.
Energy bills soaring.

The owner is dipping into her personal savings just to pay her staff while making no profit. Apparently, this is what Labour calls "growth."

It's an extraordinary economic model. Tax businesses until they're barely breathing, then act surprised when they stop investing, stop hiring, or simply stop trading altogether.

Ministers seem convinced that every small business owner is secretly sitting on a vault like Scrooge McDuck. The reality is far less glamorous: they're lying awake at 3am wondering whether payroll will clear before the bank balance hits zero.
Soon the only thing rising faster than taxes will be the number of politicians claiming they "support small business" while ensuring there are fewer of them left to support.

At this rate, Britain's high streets won't need regeneration schemes. They'll need archaeologists.
The last surviving independent baker will be displayed behind glass with a plaque reading: "Extinct. Last seen before the Treasury discovered another way to tax flour, wages and hope."
