πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ 🌺 Honouring a shared history of remembrance

Last week, Defence AttachΓ© Colonel Joris Van Belle joined a delegation from the City of Mons in Southport for the commemoration of the Battle of Mons, one of the first major engagements involving the British Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

During the ceremony, a wreath was laid in tribute to all those who served and sacrificed their lives.

The Battle of Mons, fought on 23 August 1914, occupies a special place in the shared history of Belgium and the United Kingdom. Despite being heavily outnumbered, British forces mounted a determined defence before beginning their withdrawal.

The battle also gave rise to the enduring legend of the Angels of Mons, a story that has become part of the cultural memory surrounding the events of 1914 and the courage shown in the face of adversity.

As we remember those who fought at Mons, we reaffirm the importance of preserving the memory of past sacrifices and strengthening the bonds of friendship between Belgium and the United Kingdom.

πŸ’™ On 30 July, we mark 𝐖𝐨𝐫π₯𝐝 πƒπšπ² π€π πšπ’π§π¬π­ π“π«πšπŸπŸπ’πœπ€π’π§π  𝐒𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬.

Human trafficking is a serious violation of human rights that exploits vulnerable people through coercion, deception and abuse. It can take many forms, including forced labour, sexual exploitation, forced marriage and organ trafficking.

As part of the UN's , Belgium reaffirms its commitment to preventing trafficking, protecting victims, prosecuting perpetrators and strengthening international cooperation.

This year's theme, "Trapped Behind the Scam", highlights how traffickers increasingly use fraudulent schemes to lure victims into exploitation.

Let's bring human trafficking out of the shadows and raise awareness of the signs. Together, we can help protect the most vulnerable and support survivors.
