Momentum Youth and Students - London

Momentum Youth and Students - London This is the official London Regional page for Momentum Youth and Students. Momentum is a gr Now is the time to make this a reality!

Momentum Youth and Students London are the Under 30's wing of Momentum in London. After years of being told that there is no alternative to austerity, hundreds of thousands of people stood up for a new kind of politics and agreed with Jeremy Corbyn that austerity is a political choice not a necessity. A quarter of a million people made Jeremy Corbyn Labour’s Leader. And now Labour’s conference has

given its resounding backing to Jeremy and his Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell, to turn Labour into an anti-austerity party of hope and bold alternatives. We have begun to change the Labour Party but we still have to show how we can change the country. Throughout the campaign, Jeremy spoke about building a social movement to work for a more democratic, equal and decent society. Momentum will be our grassroots network to continue the work we have begun

- To organise in every town, city and village to create a mass movement for real, progressive change.

-To transform Labour into a more democratic party with the policies and collective will to make that change in government.

- To bring together individuals and groups in our communities and workplaces to campaign and organise on the issues that matter to us. Momentum will be your network; please help build it. But right now, as we begin to organise new events and campaigns, and to launch Momentum online, we need you to help us spread the word about these plans. Begin by inviting all your Facebook friends to 'like' this page.

To develop and push ahead as a solid and driven force for Labour victory, it is vital that London Young Labour has a degree of self-determination. If elected, I would negotiate with the party establishment to ensure that a guaranteed portion of LYL members’ money goes back into LYL as a body, allowing us to spend to ensure better training, campaigning and resources.

To enable that this money goes to the fairest, most accessible body possible, I will also ensure that the next London Young Labour AGM will be voted on by OMOV. In the 21st century, it is indefensible that packing out a room to ensure factional victory is the order of the day. To enable the vast majority of our members - who are not political anoraks willing to give up their Saturdays often in unaccessible, stressful environments to elect a committee. but ordinary workers and students inspired by our Party - to participate meaningfully, this is a necessity.

Another core problem is that of data - I would also push for the Campaigns and Membership Officer to be granted access to our membership data, as CLP officers already have. It is not a ridiculous prospect that we should be allowed to contact our young members - it should be a given. Should I be elected, I will be vocal in fighting for this.

Really pleased to have been endorsed by Momentum!

The energy and innovation that Momentum activists brought to campaigning were a key factor in the historic gains made by the Labour Party in June. From challenging the consensus that harnessing the power of social media was a frivolous waste of time and developing new digital campaigning tools, to reaching out to non-voters who had been written off or campaigning to devolve power to ordinary rank and file members, Momentum has proven itself as the most dynamic force in British politics.

I've worked closely with many people across the organisation and the broader Labour movement, and look forward to taking what I've learnt into the role of London Young Labour chair.

This is great to hear!! Artin was invaluable in helping organise the Momentum Youth & Students Political School, as the Momentum endorsed left candidate for London Young Labour Chair next year he's the perfect person for the job of reaching out to the organisation's nearly 15,000 inactive members!

As a teacher, I deeply understand the importance of education and the change it can have on people. If elected chair, I will launch a bi-annual program of political education, comprised of one session per week related to all sorts of different subjects - and based off the recent success of the Momentum Youth and Students London Political School that I helped organise this autumn just gone.

The success of these events was twofold. Firstly, both new and more experienced activists learnt about the modern and historical context of our movement. A wide range of speakers freely and enthusiastically gave their time; from economists to trade union organisers, parliamentarians to Young Labour activists, all were received warmly by a large and attentive audience.

Secondly, these events regularly engaged 50 to 60 London Young Labour members, who had previously been totally inactive. We engaged with our membership in a way that we have as yet been unable to in LYL; by placing education and real discussion at the forefront of my campaign, I intend to generalise this success with Momentum and double the active membership of LYL.

In addition to a LYL Political School, by developing better relationships with industrial trade unions we can broaden the educational opportunities available to our members. The trade union movement, its structure, and its struggles, are not a step on the political ladder - they are the lifeblood of our movement.
