Meet Our Member: Andrew Powell KC⚖️

Andrew Powell KC was called to the Bar at Gray's Inn in 2008, and this March took silk as King's Counsel.

A specialist in family law, his early career was supported by the Inn through a Bedingfield Scholarship and later a Pegasus Scholarship, which took him to California to study surrogacy and fertility law.

"I was fortunate to be awarded the Bedingfield Scholarship in 2007, without which I wouldn't be where I am now."

Who can apply? 🌍

The Michael Mustill Scholarship is open to Members of the Inn who haven't yet secured pupillage but are pursuing further study, an internship, or a work placement in Alternative Dispute Resolution and arbitration.

The IDRC is one of the world's leading facilities for conducting arbitrations and ADR - funding through this scholarship could help you gain experience there or in a related placement. ⚖️

🎓 Named in honour of a leading figure in arbitration 🎓

The Michael Mustill Scholarships commemorate the life and work of Michael Mustill and are delivered in partnership with the International Dispute Resolution Centre (IDRC).

They support Members of the Inn developing skills and experience in ADR ahead of a career at the Bar.

Earlier this year we spotted that something was up with our portrait of Lady Hale, painted by artist David Cobley, which hangs in Hall. The paper by the pen pot had acquired some marks. We have taken the portrait off display whilst we carry out further investigations...

In its place we have temporarily hung our 1926 portrait of Lord Merrivale who was President of the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division. He earns his place in Hall alongside other distinguished Members, including Lord Birkenhead, Lord Bingham and Lady Rose.

Painted by distinguished artist William Orpen, in 2025 the portrait was cleaned and glazed by specialist conservators. The portrait is also 100 years old this year, so we’re thrilled to be able to show it off in Hall in its centenary year!
