✈️ Was the TSR2 one of Britain’s greatest aviation opportunities – or simply too ambitious?

Designed during the Cold War, the BAC TSR2 was expected to fly at around Mach 2, operate at extremely low altitude and use advanced navigation and attack systems to avoid enemy radar.

Despite promising test flights, rising costs and political pressure led to the project being cancelled in 1965 – a decision still debated by aviation enthusiasts today.

In our latest Pop-up Talk, Pete from the Visitor Experience team at RAF Museum Midlands explores the story of the TSR2 and XR220, the surviving example on display at the Museum.

πŸŽ₯ Watch the full talk and tell us: was cancelling the TSR2 the right decision?

✈️ From Luftwaffe fighter to captured aircraft – meet β€˜Black Six’.

After serving in North Africa, this Bf 109 was left behind as German forces withdrew and was captured when Australian forces reclaimed the airfield.

It was repainted in RAF markings, flown and evaluated by the Allies and eventually shipped to Britain for further testing at Farnborough.

Its story did not end there. Decades later, β€˜Black Six’ was restored to flying condition before eventually returning to static display.

πŸŽ₯ In our latest Pop-up Talk, Simon from the Visitor Experience team at RAF Museum Midlands tells the remarkable story of this surviving aircraft.
