➡️ Reach Volunteering is to close ⬅️

It is with great sadness that we announce that Reach Volunteering will close after 45 years of bringing charities and volunteers together.

Reach is closing despite achieving record results. In 2025, we enabled nearly 6,000 trustees and skills-based volunteers to contribute an estimated £60 million in professional expertise to charities and groups across the UK.

However, a shifting funding landscape has made national services supporting a broad range of charities and groups increasingly difficult to sustain. After exploring every avenue to secure Reach’s future, our senior leadership team and Board of Trustees have concluded that there is no sustainable way forward.

Today, we begin a 12-week values-led closure process. Our service will close in phases during this period and we will continue to share opportunities and support charities, groups and volunteers with their current recruitment and opportunity searches for as long as possible.

Regular users of Reach should keep an eye on their inboxes for practical guidance and updates throughout the process.

You can watch our full statement in the accompanying video or read it on our website: https://buff.ly/vfui7Tq

We have also prepared Frequently Asked Questions about the closure, our service and resources, and the timetable ahead: https://buff.ly/Db43oIn

We are immensely proud of everything our community has achieved together. There is still important work for us to do, and we look forward to continuing to share opportunities, support our community and champion the potential of trusteeship and skills-based volunteering throughout the weeks ahead.

The right expertise on a board can open new possibilities for a whole organisation.

Number Champions helps children build confidence in maths through weekly one-to-one sessions with trained volunteers. When more schools wanted to take part, the small charity knew that education expertise on its board would help it make informed decisions about how to grow.

Through Reach, Number Champions recruited a trustee with deep knowledge of primary schools. That insight has strengthened relationships with schools, shaped volunteer training and helped the charity plan safe and sustainable expansion.

More than 1,800 children have now benefited from the programme. It is a powerful example of how stronger governance can give an organisation greater capacity to act on its ambitions.

Rethinking trusteeship
Trustee myth #4

"It's too much responsibility."
Reality: Trustees share responsibility and receive support.

It's true that trustees have legal responsibilities.

But that doesn't mean you're expected to know everything from day one.
Trustees work as a team, making decisions collectively, and many charities provide induction, training and ongoing support. You're there to help shape the charity's direction alongside your fellow trustees - not to carry the responsibility alone.

If concerns about responsibility have put you off in the past, today's opportunities might encourage you to take another look.

A small team shouldn’t have to hold every skill in-house to grow its impact.

FEAST With Us brings people together around healthy food and community support. Through Reach, it has connected with volunteers offering expertise in marketing, fundraising, IT, communications and impact reporting.

That shared effort has strengthened the organisation behind the scenes, giving its team more capacity to run community meals, develop programmes and respond to growing demand.

This is what can happen when people have flexible ways to contribute - and organisations can access the skills they need to shape what comes next.
