Our latest issue of GiST magazine pays tribute to the surgeon who fixed the smallest hearts.

Christopher Lincoln was one of the world's most influential paediatric cardiac surgeons. In 1973 he helped establish a dedicated paediatric cardiac surgery unit at Brompton Hospital – now known as Royal Brompton Hospital – that transformed care for babies and children with complex heart conditions. The unit would go on to become internationally recognised for its excellence, innovation and training.

Christopher passed away in May aged 92, but his legacy lives on through the generations of clinicians he inspired and the countless patients whose lives were changed by his work.

As one former patient said: “This amazing man is the reason I'm alive today. Operating on me when I was only a few hours old. I will be celebrating my 41st birthday this year due to this surgical superstar. Forever grateful.”

As a tissue viability clinical nurse specialist, Rebecca's role can involve helping to treat very complex surgical wounds and pressure ulcers - wounds that require careful and specialist treatment.

But when asked about her favourite part of being a nurse specialising in wound care, Rebecca says it is being able to educate staff across the Trust in vital care skills.

"The core of what I do is to manage very complex and slow healing wounds both in the hospital and wider community. A big part of this is spending time educating ward nurses, community teams and care home staff on how to help deliver this type of care.

"I've been in my role long enough now I get the reward of seeing colleagues I've helped build in confidence and get better at treating patients. That's really what it's all about at the end of the day."

We provide free exercise classes for people with neurological conditions at Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre to help boost long term health.

Research shows that regular exercise helps people with neurological conditions improve physical function. It also reduces symptoms and promotes brain repair. At least 1 in 6 people in England live with a neurological condition.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ Community Stroke and Neuro-rehabilitation team deliver the 12 week exercise programme for patients with a neurological condition who live in Lambeth and Southwark.

Michelle Duncan, 41, from Camberwell, has neurosarcoidosis, a condition that affects the nervous system that can lead to weakness or paralysis of muscles. Michelle, who is a wheelchair user, was diagnosed in 2001 and referred by Guy’s and St Thomas’ service to attend the twice weekly classes at Peckham Pulse in May 2026.

Michelle said: “When I’m [at the gym] I’m using the arm bike. I’m using my arms and my shoulders and I’m doing the same thing when I’m pushing the wheelchair, so it did help me!

“My legs got stronger, and it’s kind of pushed me to do more things. I’m more confident getting on the bus by myself now, coming home by myself, letting myself in.”

After completing the programme patients who live in Southwark get free gym membership and swim sessions. In Lambeth patients can join an Aspire gym. Speak to a health professional to arrange referral on to the programme. More information is available at: https://ow.ly/IWcT50ZJVl4

Colleagues from Guy's and St Thomas' recently came together to celebrate Onam, one of the most important festivals in Kerala, India.🌼✨

From organising the programme to performing on the day, colleagues were at the heart of the celebrations, sharing music, dance and traditions.

Events like these are a chance to celebrate heritage, learn more about one another and strengthen the sense of belonging that makes our Trust such a special place to work.
