iniva and Chelsea Space, Chelsea College of Arts, UAL are thrilled to present 'If you like rice, you’ll understand – Collective Noise' - a cross-site exhibition, events programme and publication with artist and educator Andrew Pierre Hart.

Drawing on Stuart Hall’s cultural studies and pedagogical legacy, the project explores sound as a form of learning, cultural exchange, and diasporic experience. Through painting, photography, moving image, text, and sound, Hart considers how knowledge travels through everyday practices, informal gatherings, and sonic experiences.

The project forms the beginning of a new collaboration between cultural neighbours: a joint artist programme between iniva and Chelsea College of Arts, UAL.

New in the Stuart Hall Library!

Polaris Magazine Issue 03 - a Transational Travel Magazine Born in Japan was generously donated to our collection by its founder, Takuro Nuruki, who visited us last month.

Taki-san is an editor, researcher and strategist working across publishing, academia and independent practice, and leads Studio Polaris between Tokyo and London. His work asks how publishing and storytelling can connect research with practice, foster a sense of belonging and act as methodologies for social change. Studio Polaris explores the Living Wisdom held in local cultures and everyday life.

He is a PhD researcher at Central Saint Martins, UAL, and a Research Fellow at the Research Center for Social Creativity, Musashino Art University.

Before we closed for summer, we filled the Chelsea College of Arts courtyard with movement & authentic sound system vibes 💃

Our all-levels Dancehall workshop closed out Linett Kamala's solo exhibition at the Stuart Hall Library, Dancehall Riddim Queens. It brought together complete beginners and people who live for the riddim. Led by Shelaine Prince with music by DJ Bad Anju, the session took us through the foundations of Dancehall culture and movement, starting with a gentle warm-up before building into classic grooves and guided choreography, with plenty of room left to freestyle and find your own flow.

It was a space filled with confidence, joy and self-expression. Thank you to everyone who came and danced with us, and thank you again to Linett Kamala for sharing your beautiful artworks and the power of Dancehall with us.

We're back from the break and looking ahead to October, when we open a new exhibition with Andrew Pierre Hart: If you like rice, you'll understand – Collective Noise.

We are delighted to announce the writers selected to develop new texts as part of the next phase of The Message Is in the Pattern, the third iteration of iniva’s Post-National Digital Pavilion. ✏️

We're so excited to welcome Bardi Osobuanomola Catherine, Victoria Adukwei Bulley, Vijayta Lalwani, Ritika Biswas and Kefiloe Siwisa who will develop new texts responding to the three commissioned digital works by Anya Paintsil (UK), Rajyashri Goody (India), and Rose Afefé (Brazil). These contributions will then form part of a forthcoming publication which extends the conversations and questions raised by the commissions through a range of critical, creative and experimental approaches to writing.

The international open call for writers received a total of 117 applications and we are deeply grateful to everyone who shared their work with us. We were inspired by the extraordinary range of perspectives, geographies, and writing practices represented across the applications.

Stuart Hall Library will be closed over the summer, as the iniva team will be taking a well-deserved rest, and prepare for an exciting rest of the year!

Our online shop is still available so feel free to browse and purchase our publications and artist editions. iniva is a registered charity and all of our income supports the work we do in developing and sustaining international artistic research, education practices, and keeping the Stuart Hall Library and iniva’s Archive free to the public.

Last Tuesday we had a wonderful sharing and discussion with Rajyashri Goody, moderated by our curator Beatriz Lobo. Though Anya Paintsil was sadly unable to join us, it was a rare opportunity to experience in person the digital commissions made for The Message Is in the Pattern: A Post-National Digital Pavilion 2026. Rajyashri spoke about the thinking behind her work — from collaborating with communities to the everyday practices that shape it.

The Message Is in the Pattern, our third edition of the Post-National Digital Pavilion, invited artists Anya Paintsil (UK), Rajyashri Goody (India), and Rose Afefé (Brazil) to create new digital works exploring community engagement, cultural translation, and artistic and social practices. Dance Party is an all-levels dance workshop led by Shelaine Prince, with music by DJ Bad Anju in response to the Dancehall Riddim Queens exhibition by Linett Kamala. Whether you’ve never danced a step or you live for the riddim, this is a space to move, let loose and have fun.

No experience needed and no pressure to get it “right”. Just bring yourself and a willingness to move. Complete beginners are warmly encouraged, and you’ll be supported every step of the way in a friendly, judgement-free environment.
