Hammersmith United Charities

Hammersmith United Charities Hammersmith's charity since 1618. Exceptional sheltered housing and focused grant making. Building a legacy for the people of Hammersmith.

Hammersmith United Charities invests in the people and communities in the 8 northern wards of the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham to tackle poverty, deprivation and disadvantage, building on our legacies, wisdom, learning and experience gained over 400 years. We support local people to build their confidence and resourcefulness, develop their own talents and skills, connect people together

and strengthen relationships and neighbourliness within and across diverse communities. We achieve these aims by:

•managing vibrant sheltered housing communities for older people where residents work alongside the Charity’s gardener and horticulturalist to make safe beautiful environments for people to share and enjoy as neighbours
•funding a community based grants programme
•match funding the Wormholt & White City Big Local with the Lottery; and
•by working with local people, organisations and businesses to make Hammersmith a great place.”

As Head of Grants and Community, you’ll help to ensure that we respond effectively to changing community needs. This is a varied, outward-facing and highly collaborative role, combining strategic leadership with operational delivery. It offers the autonomy to take ideas from concept to delivery. Working directly with the Chief Executive and Trustees, you’ll have significant influence over the Charity’s strategic direction, grant making, partnerships, communications and wider community work.

Do you know someone on a low income who’s looking for a new home? We currently have a small number of flats available. Our almshouses offer local people over 60 a lively and welcoming community, beautiful communal gardens and on-site scheme managers. Applicants need to have lived in our area of benefit for at least five years. Find out more at: https://hamunitedcharities.org.uk/housing-for-older-people/

Akiko has been living at Sycamore House for almost a year now. She told us, "Everybody respects our latent individuality and really honours that. We are getting older, yes, but we still need our independence. There are community activities; it’s up to the resident if they want to join in.

"I know some older people like bingo… I don’t like bingo, but I love to bring joy through things like disco. So, we’ve put afternoon discos on a couple of times, including an LGBTQ+ party. There was no alcohol, no drugs, it was just about coming in and enjoying music and dance. I’m planning another one for autumn, once it’s cooled down a bit."

You can read the full interview with Akiko on our website. https://hamunitedcharities.org.uk/2026/08/20/we-are-getting-older-yes-but-we-still-need-our-independence/

The voluntary sector plays a crucial role in Hammersmith, making life easier for thousands of people. From hospice care to mental health support, the services offered across the borough change lives. We’ve been supporting these grassroots causes for many years, by awarding Community Grants to groups that make a tangible impact in our area. Our July grants round saw 15 groups awarded a total of £106,798.

You can find out which groups are benefitting on our website: https://hamunitedcharities.org.uk/2026/08/13/july-2026-grants-announced/

Our gardens are designed with both residents and wildlife in mind. Many of our plants were chosen because they attract butterflies, bees and other pollinators.

Wildlife really needs water during dry spells like we’re experiencing now. Sycamore House has a pond, so we often see dragonflies. We also have a lot of common garden birds, such as sparrows, robins, wrens and blackbirds, as well as the Eurasian jay. A resident once saw a heron here!

We’ve captured a few photos of regular visitors, so thought we’d share them. How cute is the grasshopper?
