To anyone who likes to potter around the garden, think about how you could apply the skills of cultivating and nurturing to fostering children.

Like a greenhouse’s function, providing a temporary, protected, and nurturing environment designed to shelter vulnerable life from harsh external elements until it is strong enough to thrive on its own.
Repotting: Moving to a new foster home is like transferring a plant to a new pot. The sudden change causes temporary wilting or distress, requiring extra warmth, gentle watering, and time to adjust to the new environment.
Pruning and Healing: Addressing trauma and difficult past experiences is like careful pruning. It involves gently removing damaged or unhealthy patterns so the child can redirect their energy toward healthy, new growth.

"I love fostering, but when my foster child asked for chips for dinner every night, I did get exasperated."

It can be frustrating when children choose not to eat their dinner, repeatedly. Children in foster care have often experienced chaotic home lives and a lack of guidance. They may not be used to eating healthy food or being told so.

We remind our foster carers that children must know that food is easily available. We also have additional guidance on our website (link in our bio).

Yes, children or teenagers may 'act out', show defiance or aggression, but there will be a reason behind their behaviour.

We offer training and guidance to our foster carers to practice trauma-informed parenting. This support is 24/7 365 days a year.
