Last week Islington hosted powerful events that challenge discrimination and promote unity for National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

Talks from our community safety officers, support services and the police highlighted that anyone can be a perpetrator or a victim of a hate crime. Food and games were enjoyed, worldviews were expanded and connections were made. Residents shared emotional examples of how hate crime has affected them personally and were supported by their friends and neighbours.

Residents learnt more about hate crime including how to report it and the support available to victims.

Safety is everybody’s business and everyone should feel safe, respected and welcome in Islington, whoever they are.

🐝🌼 The multi-award-winning Clerkenwell Pollinator Path is helping bring nature back to one of London's most urban neighbourhoods!

Local volunteers have been busy transforming tree pits, tending community growing spaces, collecting seeds, building habitats and creating vital "pollinator pit stops" for bees, butterflies, flies, beetles, and other insects.

Their hard work recently earned the project two honours at the Islington in Bloom Awards 2026. 🏆

Find out how a whole host of residents are helping pollinators thrive and building a stronger community along the way. 💚

What happens when residents are given the tools, funding and support to improve their own neighbourhood? ☀️ 🫱🏻‍🫲🏾

On Loraine Estate, neighbours have come together to launch bingo nights, cooking classes, CPR workshops, arts and crafts sessions, women's Zumba classes and much more, building new friendships and a stronger sense of community. Residents have even created their own website and social media channels to keep everyone connected! These photos show some of their activities, including celebrating the Arsenal Parade as an estate.

Local resident Mustafah said: "I grew up knowing my neighbours, and it's amazing to have that feeling again."

Creating a safer Islington takes all of us working together. While you're sleeping, teams are working across Islington to help keep our borough safe.

Neighbourhood Patrol and Parkguard officers are out patrolling estates, parks and town centres every night.

They respond to reports of anti-social behaviour and noise nuisance, tackle fly-tipping and patrol known hotspots.

More officers patrol on the weekends and during especially busy times there's even more support available in the form of the Night Safety Hub.

The hub offers phone charging, water, flip-flops for tired feet, transport advice and medical support from trained paramedics.

The Hub is funded through our Late Night Levy, which is paid by businesses that sell alcohol late at night.

Safety is everyone's business and it’s a team effort from us, the Metropolitan Police, businesses and you to make Islington a safer place day and night.

What makes you feel safe at night?

After struggling to find a job, Sami joined Connect to Work and received personalised support with job searching, interviews, confidence building and advocating for the support he needed.

The programme also helped him discover a new career goal. Sami is now working towards gaining his CSCS card and hopes to secure a carpentry apprenticeship.

We stand together against hate.

Yesterday we joined the Metropolitan Police Service , Hackney Council and Haringey Council outside Finsbury Park station to say no to hate.

Our community safety team alongside Executive Member for Community Safety Cllr Heather Staff listened to residents concerns about community safety and hate crime and shared information about the work we are doing and how they can get involved.

We're working with the police, community organisations and businesses to help create a safer borough, day and night. Everyone should feel safe, respected and welcome in Islington, whoever they are. Report hate crime to the police online or by calling 101.

If you'd like to raise awareness of hate crime and make a difference in your community email [email protected] to join our growing network of volunteers.
