As we prepare for winter, the changing season is bringing an early surge in calls from very sick patients and those with respiratory illnesses.

After our busiest ever September, calls for the sickest patients – known as ‘Category 1’ – have risen steadily to well over 500 a day in recent days, and 111 calls are up 19% compared to the same time last year as people seek advice around colds and flu.

We are calling on those eligible to get their flu vaccine, and for Londoners to follow
NHS UK advice on colds, flu and winter health ✅

London Ambulance Chief Executive Jason Killens KAM said:

“I’d like to thank all our people who worked hard to get to patients through a record-breaking summer and continue to provide compassionate care to the capital through this time of increased pressure.

“As 999 and 111 calls continue to rise and we attend a much higher number of extremely sick patients than is usual for the time of year, it’s timely that we have finalised the most detailed planning for winter we have done to reinforce our response.

“This includes the use of AI to free up time for clinicians, more crews on the road and in control rooms, and more patients being treated over the phone so they don’t have to go to hospital unnecessarily."

Our paramedics and police officers reunited with Mel who collapsed from cardiac arrest when watching the London Marathon ⬇️

Mel was cheering on a friend taking part in the with her daughter Nichea, 26, when she collapsed.

Our teams worked with officers from City of London Police, some of whom had been working at the event, rushed to her rescue.

Mel’s survival is all the more incredible since despite undertaking chest compressions and defibrillation, our crews were unable to restart Mel’s heart. She was then treated on a specialist pathway.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation or‘ECMO’ – undertakes the job of a working heart and lungs, providing oxygenated blood to the vital organs whilst doctors work to treat the underlying cause of the cardiac arrest.

She is the first survivor to have benefitted from a new protocol which allows paramedics direct access to a specialist team and specialist equipment at a hospital without having to go to an Emergency Department first. Without this intervention, it is unlikely that Mel would have survived.

June Spencer's Blitz diary reveals life behind the wheel of a wartime London ambulance ⬇️

Her wartime diaries have been brought to life by history writer Naomi Clifford in her book Under Fire, which has recently been added to the London Ambulance Service Historic Collection.

June was 19 when she joined the London Auxiliary Ambulance Service which had been set up as part of the civil defence effort, often responding to incidents in extraordinarily dangerous conditions and caring for patients after bombing raids during the Blitz.

More than 5,000 people volunteered for the London Auxiliary Ambulance Service during the war, and over half of those were women.

The volunteers came from across the capital and from many different walks of life, including shop assistants, artists, taxi drivers and housewives.

200 London Ambulance Service colleagues celebrating 5,400 years of service 👏

This week we celebrated our people with 20, 30 or 40 years of service, presenting them medals or medallions at the Emmanuel Centre for their contribution to the capital, in front of peers and loved ones.

The Celebration Of Service ceremony brings people together from across the organisation, including those working in ambulances, control rooms and behind the scenes.

We can't thank you for everything you do to care for London 💚

A year after a life-changing incident, Victor Arotsky has reunited with the paramedics who helped save his life.

Last June, Victor suffered a cardiac arrest after a Lime bike knocked him into the path of a coach during a lunchtime run in central London.

Thanks to the quick actions of Metropolitan Police Service, London Ambulance crews and London's Air Ambulance Victor survived against the odds.

After spending four weeks in a coma and months recovering from devastating injuries, Victor has returned to work and is back running regularly.

At an emotional reunion, Victor and his family met the paramedics involved in his care to thank them personally.

He said: "If I lived 1,000 more years there still would not be enough time for me to express the gratitude I have to everyone that helped rescue me that day."

Making dreams come true, one magical mile at a time. ✨

Last weekend saw several volunteers join MagicalTaxiTour helping hundreds of children and their families enjoy the trip of a lifetime to Disneyland Paris.

Among those making magical memories was seven-year-old Bella, who is being treated for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, alongside her mum Kim and twin sister Lilly.

Kim said: "Just one year ago, Bella was receiving high-dose chemotherapy in hospital. This weekend, she was running around Disneyland with friends she met during treatment, creating memories her family could only have dreamed of."

For our volunteers, it was a privilege to be part of such a special journey.
As Incident Response Officer and Event Team Commander John said: “These children and families have faced unimaginable challenges, and they deserve moments of happiness, laughter and joy.

Seeing the smiles on the children's faces, and on the faces of their parents and loved ones, is a reminder of just how much this incredible event means.”

A huge thank you to everyone involved alongside in making the magic happen.

A wish come true for lifelong Brentford fan Paul 💚

Paul has been a Brentford FC season ticket holder since he was 11 years old, following the club's incredible journey from the lower leagues to the Premier League. But living with terminal, end-stage heart failure, he never thought he would make it back to the Gtech Community Stadium.

Thanks to the dedication of our London Ambulance Service Wish Ambulance volunteers, that changed earlier this month.

After being contacted by Paul's end-of-life care team, volunteer paramedics Lena, Elizabeth and Ben gave their time to help Paul and his wife Wendy attend Brentford's Premier League fixture against Chelsea.

The couple watched Brentford's memorable 3-0 victory from the comfort of a hospitality box generously provided by the club. But for Paul, the evening was about much more than football. It was the chance to reconnect with friends he had sat alongside for years, see familiar faces once again, and create lasting memories with loved ones. Former Brentford players also stopped by to say hello.

Paul said: "Watching Brentford one last time was amazing. I honestly thought I would never get the chance. But that night was about more than just football; it was a chance to spend time with friends and family. Thank you to everyone involved who helped make this happen."

We're incredibly proud of our Wish Ambulance volunteers, who help make special moments like this possible for patients receiving end-of-life care.
