There are just 5 days left to apply or nominate others for IIC's 2026 Keck Award.

Communicating to the public everything that is involved in the art and science of conservation has always been a skill in itself. We believe that promoting public understanding, storytelling, and appreciation of conservation are becoming increasingly important ways to recognise, inspire, and contextualise the work of our profession. Projects that reach diverse and underrepresented audiences and regions are particularly welcomed, as well as initiatives that increase social impact and inspire creative engagement.

The award is a certificate of recognition and a prize of £2500, which will be presented online at the next biennial IIC Ghent Congress 2026 on 8-11 September 2026.

“Just south of Dublin is Dun Laoghaire (that’s pronounced “Dunn LEER-y”, for those unfamiliar), an affluent and well-kept harbour town surrounding a standard-issue shopping centre. However, those who venture around the back of the shopping centre (behind the Starbucks) will find the most unique and beautiful hidden gem of a site I’ve encountered in Ireland: the painted Oratory of the Sacred Heart.”

Today, we are sharing a preview from research that will be presented at IIC's 2026 Congress in Ghent on September 8-11.

Barbara Borghese, one of the authors of 'Preserving Intention: A Conservation Framework for The Blue Skies Project,' shares this quote:

"Our project demonstrated that preserving contemporary art increasingly involves preserving behaviours, transformations, and conceptual relationships, not only material stability. As conservators, our role increasingly involves negotiating between institutional responsibility, material change, technological obsolescence, and conceptual continuity."

Barbara Borghese is the Lead Conservator (Paper, Photographs & Books) at the V&A and a Fellow of the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (IIC). She has developed expertise in the heritage sector by working for over 25 years in major public and non-profit institutions, covering various roles in collection care. From 2010 to 2018, she served as Editor of News in Conservation and has remained an advocate for increasing and democratising access to the sector through various international initiatives
and engagement work.

There are 2 weeks left to apply to become a Digital Engagement Volunteer at the 2026 IIC Congress in Ghent.

We will be hosting a hybrid in-person/online IIC Congress this September, and as with past congresses, we will need extra hands to support our digital and in-person engagement activities and session moderating.

We have a limited number of places available for those wishing to contribute some volunteer hours during the Congress this year, and preference will be given to those attending in person.
