In 2025/26, the Local Government Association offered support to 100 per cent of local authorities that experienced a change of political leadership or control.

This kind of responsive, tailored support only works if it reflects what authorities actually need. That is why we are asking senior leaders, councillors and officers to share their experience of our improvement support programme, and to help identify any gaps.

Your feedback will directly shape the support on offer over the next year, whatever challenges or transitions your authority is facing.

The survey takes five minutes to complete. Please submit your response by Monday 9 November 2026.

Meaningful devolution can help integrate services, support businesses and create opportunities for residents.
But devolution will only succeed if the sector has the powers and funding it needs to deliver.

We are calling on Government to:

➡️ Set out a clear timetable for local government reorganisation

➡️ Progress new innovative models of devolution that enable greater decision-making at local and strategic authority level

➡️ Deliver on its previous commitments to look at ways to reduce burdens on local authorities

➡️ Introduce a revised approach to Exceptional Financial Support

➡️ Promote the integration of public services delivered in places.

From artificial intelligence to local government reorganisation, good decisions increasingly rely on good data.

This free data masterclass is designed specifically for council chief executives who want to see how better use of data can transform services, save money and improve outcomes. You will hear real case studies, gain practical insights, and have a confidential space to discuss your own data challenges with fellow chief executives.

The session runs for two hours and will be delivered virtually via MS Teams on Tuesday 20 October 2026. Places are limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Emergency financial support cannot become a substitute for sustainable council funding.

For 2026/27, 36 councils received special dispensation to use capital receipts or borrowing to help set balanced budgets. Of these, 33 have social care responsibilities. This means 1 in 5 social care councils depended on a significant, one-off relaxation of the financial framework.

Local and strategic authorities are central to delivering new homes, supporting economic growth and improving people’s lives. But they need strong financial foundations to achieve this.

Despite a strong track record of innovation and efforts to drive efficiency, councils face a £7 billion funding gap by 2028/29.

The Autumn Budget must provide councils with a significant increase in overall funding to stem the emerging risk of system-wide financial failure and to ensure that the sector can meet demand for the vital services communities need and deserve.
