🚨London chicken shop fined £25,000 over food safety failings.

A South Norwood chicken shop has been fined £25,000 after serious hygiene failures were uncovered.

Croydon Council EHOs who visited AA Chicken World found:

❌ Dirty food storage and equipment
❌ Improper food handling
❌ Mouse droppings on surfaces
❌ Staff lacking basic food safety knowledge

The owners pleaded guilty to food safety offences and was fined £25,000 plus a victim surcharge of £10,000. Its director, Tharshan Makenthiram, who also admitted guilt, and was ordered to pay a total of £3,827, comprising a fine, costs and a victim surcharge.

After initial visits uncovered the issues, hygiene improvement notices were served but the Food Business Operator failed to comply.

The Council decided to prosecute owing to a failure to put in place a system for controlling food risk and get staff trained.

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, said: “Food businesses have a legal responsibility to meet hygiene standards. Our food safety team works with businesses to help them improve, but where serious failings are ignored, we will not hesitate to take enforcement action.

“This prosecution sends a clear message – if you fail to comply with food safety laws and put residents at risk, you can expect to face the consequences.”

Just one hour of exposure to everyday air pollution can impact both lung function and brain performance, new UK research shows.

In a controlled study, 15 healthy volunteers were exposed to common pollutants: clean air, diesel exhaust, woodsmoke, cooking emissions, and limonene SOA – a citrus-based compound often found in cleaning products.

Among the key findings were that lung function declined after just 60 minutes of exposure and Limonene had the greatest impact, followed by woodsmoke, diesel exhaust, and cooking emissions.

Researchers also found effects across key areas of cognitive performance, including memory, attention, motor control and socio-emotional processing.

Dr Thomas Faherty (University of Birmingham) said the findings add to growing evidence that short-term exposure can affect both brain and lung function within hours — and that the type of pollution matters, not just the amount.

Today is World Pest Day 🐜

A new independent report commissioned by the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) highlights the real economic and social value of professional pest management in the UK.

Despite being a relatively small sector, pest control delivers a big impact:

• Contributes £1bn annually to the UK economy
• Saves households and businesses an additional £1.9bn each year
• Protects food supply chains, healthcare environments and housing standards
• Supports business continuity across the country

The No Small Matter report by Pragmatix Advisory reveals the true scale of this work, with over 4.4 million jobs carried out in 2025 across homes, high streets, hospitals, schools, farms and transport hubs nationwide.

Ian Andrews, Head of Environmental Health at CIEH, said: “This report highlights the critical role pest management plays in protecting public health and keeping essential services running.

"The environmental health profession sees first-hand the consequences of pest infestations, particularly in domestic settings, food settings and vulnerable communities, where the risks to health and wellbeing can be significant.

“While pest control is vital, investing in prevention is key to reducing harm and avoiding the wider social and economic costs identified in this report.”

A CIEH expert member has highlighted the gaps in the current regulatory framework for cosmetic procedures in evidence to a Commons select committee.

The House of Commons Science, Innovation and Technology Committee is conducting an inquiry into the science and regulation of hair and beauty products and treatments.

Victor Ktorakis, who has been the lead for Special Treatments Licensing for the London Borough of Enfield for over 18 years and is currently co-chair for the London Special Treatments Working Group, was giving oral evidence to the Committee on behalf of CIEH.

Victor contrasted the lack of change in the regulatory framework for cosmetic treatments since the introduction of the London Local Authorities Act 1991 with the changes in the marketplace for such treatments.

He said: “We have treatments on the high street now that we would never have imagined being available back in 1991.”

He also highlighted inconsistencies between the regulatory frameworks in different local authority areas. These included differences in licence conditions between different London boroughs, for example in relation to qualification standards for practitioners.

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care now has the power to introduce an England-wide licensing scheme for non-surgical cosmetic procedures under the Health and Care Act 2022. The previous government held a consultation on the scope of a proposed new licensing scheme in 2023.

Mark Elliott, CIEH President, said: “We want the Government to speed up the implementation of the new licensing scheme without any reduction in the proposed range of procedures to be regulated.”
