We are the largest funder for the UK's heritage, awarding and Government support.

Our vision is for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future. The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the largest dedicated grant funder of the UK’s heritage.

- We distribute National Lottery grants from £3,000 to £5million and over, funding projects that sustain and transform the UK's heritage.
- We distribute other UK heritage funding, for example of behalf of governments.

This is one wonky wonder 🏗️

St James' Church in Dry Doddington has a tower that leans even more dramatically than the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Thanks to the support of players, we’re funding its vital repairs.

Originally constructed in the 12th century using clay without foundations, the tower developed its extraordinary tilt. Although it was underpinned in 1918 to minimise further leaning, the floor continued to sink.

The restoration work will ensure the tower's safety so that the community can enjoy this unique landmark for generations to come. 🙌

Off to see the Bayeux Tapestry? You'll also get to see the Chew Valley Hoard! 🪙

The 70-metre-long tapestry is in the UK for the first time in 1,000 years. It depicts the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.

The British Museum exhibition shares the wider story of the conquest, bringing together collections from across the UK and Europe. One of those is a remarkable collection of silver pennies featuring Harold II and William I, known as the Chew Valley Hoard.

Discovered in January 2019 by metal detectorists, the 2,584 coins represent a turning point in English history, covering the transition from Saxon to Norman rule. They were likely buried for safekeeping during the turmoil.

Thanks to National Lottery players, our funding is helping communities engage with the collection and creating a permanent home for it at the .

Bringing generations in Manchester’s Hong Kong community closer 🤝

The Reconnecting Roots project is supporting people from Manchester's Hong Kong community to preserve the stories of older community members for future generations. Our funding has trained volunteers to collect oral histories, helping them document memories of life in Hong Kong, experiences of migrating to the UK, and reflections on keeping traditions alive in a new place.

The project is also bringing people together through bilingual workshops and events shaped by the community itself, including:

- sharing mooncakes and crafting lanterns for a Mid-Autumn Reunion Festival

- a Lunar New Year banquet celebrating festive customs and traditional dishes, such as tangyuan and p**n choi

- Chinese calligraphy and traditional character writing workshops

This project is helping Hong Kong communities in Manchester celebrate their heritage, bringing people of all ages together to share traditions and stories.

Do you recognise this building? 🔎

St Columb’s Hall was built 140 years ago and ever since has played a central role in the political, social and cultural life of Derry / Londonderry.

Over the years, it’s welcomed Emmeline Pankhurst and Eamon de Valera, held performances for local and international acts including The Undertones and featured in Derry Girls’ Hallowe’en episode where Fat Boy Slim performed at the hall.

But today only one third of the building is in a usable condition. It has now been purchased using our funding and brought into community ownership. The project will help repair the Grade A listed site, improve its access and facilities and engage 3,000 people with its heritage.

For generations, this building has been at the heart of people’s memories. Now, this redevelopment will help secure its future for communities to enjoy.

Dewsbury Arcade has been saved for the local community! 🛍️

Originally opened in 1899, the Grade II listed landmark thrived in the 1950s and 1960s before changing shopping habits led to its decline in the early 2000s.

On Saturday, the site reopened following a major restoration, bringing it back to its former glory as a place for people to meet, shop and discover local independent traders.

It's now home to 16 affordable small shops, artist studios and an event space, and is being managed by The Arcade Group, a community benefit society made up of local residents and businesses.

This is a fantastic example of how communities can help secure the future of the historic places they care about. 💚

Did you know a more sustainable future starts outside your door? 🌾

From seed to plate, Ein Cegin CIC, a community kitchen in west Wales, is reviving traditional ways of growing and preparing food.

Sophie Bennett-Alford, Co-founder and Director, explains their goal to: “reconnect local families with the diverse ingredients, recipes, knowledge and skills that belong to our cultural heritage.”

Through the project, Ein Cegin found ways to:
- Create opportunities for communities to respond to the climate and cost of living crisis
- Make food heritage more accessible
- Bring people together through shared experiences and learning

Working with Flying Start and Plant Dewi, the project has helped boost wellbeing, strengthen climate resilience and build community connections.

From sunbathing lizards to great crested newts, the UK's amphibians and reptiles depend on healthy habitats to survive.

That's why we're proud to support Froglife's Coalface to Wildspace project, transforming 31 post-industrial sites across Scotland and Yorkshire into thriving spaces for wildlife.

But the benefits don't stop there. Alongside restoring habitats, the project will improve access to green spaces for local communities, creating opportunities for people to connect with nature, learn new skills and get involved in protecting their natural heritage.

Pushing through project development hurdles...

The projects we fund have their own unique ups and downs, and learning to ride them is a skill. Part of the development phase for the large projects we support is providing time and resources to work through the planning and preparation essential for success. 🚧

Ballycastle Museum’s current project is a masterclass in facing challenges head on and coming out stronger for it. Dr Nic Wright, Ballycastle Museum Project Officer at Causeway Coast and Glens Museum Services shared his advice and reflections in our most recent grantee Q&A:

“We faced quite a few challenges over the course of the development phase and each one of them potentially could have been a project-ending issue.

“A dogged perseverance and stubbornness are essential: that resilience to see that issues aren’t insurmountable. And a good team around you.

“I had good support within the museum service, our architects provided thoughtful and practical solutions, the volunteers were amazing and our Investment Manager at the Heritage Fund was understanding and supportive.”

Having a dedicated project officer on the ground in Ballycastle also made a huge difference to keeping the community informed and involved as planning progressed. That single, recognisable face running the project’s engagement activities built trust and led to unexpected positive consequences.
