Instagram: The Countryside Alliance is known for its lobbying and campaigning work on wildlife and management, but its agenda is far broader than that, incorporating food & farming, local businesses and services, and the injustices of poor mobile phone signal and broadband in the countryside. The Countryside Alliance was formed in 1997 when the British Field Sports Society, the Countryside Movement and the Countryside Business Group the Alliance amalgamated. We are known for having arranged several pro-countryside marches and rallies including the Hyde Park Rally on 10 July 1997, the Countryside March on 1 March 1998 (360,000 people) and the Liberty & Livelihood March on 22 September 2002 (407,791 people). These demonstrations were held to support fieldsports in response to a newly elected Labour Government that was hostile. The wrangling over fieldsports continued for many years resulting in the failed and discredited Hunting Act 2004. We work tirelessly to promote and protect hunting and shooting interests, and our work for fishing includes Countryside Alliance Foundation projects; Fishing for Schools and Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland. Although country sports remain on the frontline of our campaigns, we are anything but single issue. Our campaigns on broadband, mobile phone signal, fly tipping, affordable housing, food & farming and rural business (through the Countryside Alliance Awards) show that we represent the interests of those who love the British countryside, regardless of who or where they are. With around 100,000 members and supporters, the Countryside Alliance promotes and protects rural life at Parliament, in the media and on the ground. Join us at www.countryside-alliance.org

'No winds are blowing in our favour'. Sadly, that sentiment feels all too familiar for many involved in the horse racing industry.

From trainers and stable staff, to hospitality workers and racegoers, thousands of people depend on a thriving racing industry.

We asked those involved why policymakers need to better understand the realities of racing before introducing legislation that affects it.

Holiday lets are businesses, not second homes.

From farm diversification to family-run cottages, holiday accommodation supports rural jobs and tourism. Reclassifying holiday lets for council tax purposes risks making viable rural businesses unviable.

Pubs aren’t the only rural businesses that need support.

The 20% business rates reduction for pubs is welcome. But rural restaurants and hotels face many of the same pressures and are vital to local jobs and tourism.

Rural businesses need room to employ.

Employers’ National Insurance adds pressure to businesses that rely on people to deliver their services. The government should cut the 15% rate or restore the previous £9,100 Secondary Threshold.

Back rural employers and protect jobs.

Greyhound racing is a long-established industry that supports jobs, businesses and communities, yet many within the sport feel ignored by policymakers.

We handed the microphone to those involved in greyhound racing and asked a simple question:

Why does government need to reset its relationship with the countryside?

Their answers highlight growing concerns about the impact of legislation on rural industries, communities and traditions.

🎥 Take a listen.

Six hours. That’s how long the SFI budget lasted.

The 2026 Sustainable Farming Incentive budget was exhausted just six hours after opening. Farmers need reliable support they can plan around, not a scheme that shuts the door almost as soon as it opens.

Family farms are a legacy, not just an asset.

Raising the inheritance tax relief threshold was welcome, but concerns still remain for farms. Farms can be asset-rich but cash-poor, putting the future of family businesses at risk.

Protecting family farms means protecting our domestic food production and the UK’s long-term food security. This Budget, it’s time for a rural reset. Write to the Prime Minister asking for a rural reset ➡️ www.ruralreset.org

Win a shoot day at Holkham Estate for 10 guns worth ÂŁ17,500!

Set within one of North Norfolk’s most remarkable landscapes and among the finest shoots in the country, the winner and their guests will shoot six drives with a mixture of pheasant and red-legged partridge, and a combination of wild and released game.

The shoot is laid out over 16,000 of the estate’s 25,000 acres, with the estate taking huge pride in their outstanding conservation practices. Lunch will be served in The Temple, a striking Palladian folly, and on completion of shooting tea will be available in the Hall.

The shoot will take place on a date to be mutually agreed during the 2027 / 2028 season, and we are enormously grateful to the Earl of Leicester for so generously donating this 175-bird day to the Countryside Alliance.
