Glass Door Homeless Charity

Glass Door Homeless Charity Our vision is a future where no one experiences homelessness in London. http://www.glassdoor.org.uk

We offer advice, shelter and support with our community partners, helping people build a route out of homelessness. As London’s largest emergency winter night shelter, Glass Door provides a safe, warm place to sleep for just under 100 men and women every night in winter -- from November to early April. We are able to do this thanks to partnerships with churches across the boroughs of Hammersmith &

Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea and Wandsworth. Guests experiencing homelessness can also access advice, food, showers and laundry facilities from drop-in day centres. Glass Door not only saves lives by providing refuge from the cold, we also help our guests build more stable futures.

As Volunteers’ Week comes to a close, we want to say one final thank you to every volunteer who has given their time, energy, and compassion to support our guests, past or present.

Your kindness makes a real difference every single day.

This week may be ending, but our gratitude lasts all year round. Thank you for being part of the Glass Door community. 💜

Can rent controls solve the housing crisis — or could they backfire?

In recent weeks, there has been a lot of public discussion of rent controls.

This has included reports from think tanks, opinion pieces in newspapers and posts across social media, with a wide variety of different perspectives. Could legal controls help to make renting more affordable, or would they be counterproductive?

This is an important debate to have, as it is undeniable that private rents are far too high and are driving homelessness.

We looked at the history of rent controls in the UK, and some of the arguments for and against them, in a blog post earlier this year: https://ow.ly/IMPS50Z6aTO

Every act of support makes a huge difference. Whether they’re welcoming guests at our night shelters, helping with triage at our day centres, offering translation support, or being a member of our lived experience group, our volunteers bring empathy, kindness, and humanity to everything they do.

We couldn’t be more grateful to every volunteer who gives their time to support our guests. Thank you. 💜

This Summer, you can support someone's journey out of homelessness, just like Samir.

There are many more guests who need your help – our Casework Service runs all year round, and we are consistently oversubscribed.

Please donate to our Summer Appeal so that someone else in need can get life-saving advice and support.

This Pride Month, we celebrate the strength, diversity, and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. 🌈

At Glass Door, we believe everyone deserves safety, dignity, and support -without judgement. That’s why our services are open access, so anyone facing homelessness can turn to us regardless of who they are or where they are from.

This month and always, we stand for inclusion, compassion, and equality.

When it comes to refugee homelessness, the last year has seen quite a few ups and downs. There was a promising government pilot programme, a sudden u-turn, a legal challenge and more.

Overall, we have seen some positive steps forward, but refugees are still at risk of homelessness without adequate move-on policies, and a lot more work still remains to be done.

Our Migrant Services and Advocacy Manager, Anna Yassin, has written about all of this in our latest blog 👉 https://ow.ly/cejG50Z4By1

How does having No Recourse to Public Funds affect someone experiencing homelessness? And can it sometimes be the cause of their homelessness?

In our night shelters last winter, we supported a large number of guests who had No Recourse to Public Funds. This is a ‘condition’ placed upon them that makes the whole process of trying to build a route out of homelessness much more difficult, both for our guests and Caseworkers.

In our latest blog, we discuss what NRPF means, who it affects, whether it's permanent, and what other support is available for people who are NRPF and need support to find housing.
