Getting your child ready for their vaccination?

We know vaccine appointments can feel daunting - for both children and parents.

We’re sharing some simple tips to help make the visit as calm and easy as possible πŸ’™

βœ… Choose an appointment time when your child wouldn’t be having their usual sleep time
βœ… Dress them in loose clothing
βœ… Bring their Red Book to update their records
βœ… Take along a favourite toy, blanket or snack

Under 6 months - giving them a cradling cuddle and letting them hear your voice can help keep your baby calm.
Between 6 and 12 months - a cuddle in an upright position works well during vaccinations.

Young children - hold your child on your knee or ask a member of the practice to help you with this if you are uneasy around injections. Try to explain very simply what is going to happen, for example, β€œYou might feel a tiny scratch, but it will go away very fast.”

During the appointment, a calm voice and a little reassurance can make a big difference.

Afterwards, your child may feel a little unsettled, but this is normal and usually passes quickly.

If you have any concerns about your child following their vaccine, speak to your GP or call NHS 111.

πŸ’‰ As we enjoy the warmer months, it's worth remembering that RSV can circulate at any time of the year.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that can lead to serious illness in older adults, including pneumonia.

That's why the NHS offers a free RSV vaccine to people aged 75 and over and those living in care homes for older adults.

Whether you're spending time with family, travelling, or simply enjoying an active lifestyle, getting vaccinated can help reduce your risk of becoming seriously unwell.

πŸ“ž Contact your GP surgery to book your RSV vaccination. You don't need to wait for an invitation.

πŸ«„ Every parent wants to give their baby the best possible start in life.

Vaccinations during pregnancy are one way to help protect your baby before they're even born.

By getting vaccinated during pregnancy, you can pass protection to your baby against serious illnesses during their earliest months, when they're most vulnerable.

The NHS offers vaccines during pregnancy that help protect against:
βœ” Whooping cough
βœ” RSV
βœ” Flu (during flu season)

If you're pregnant and have questions about the vaccines available, speak to your midwife, GP practice or maternity team.

They can talk you through the options and help you make an informed decision that's right for you and your family. β™₯️

Happy Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month.

North east London is home to thousands of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people, making the month an important opportunity to recognise and celebrate the history, culture and contribution of these communities.

It’s also a chance to highlight the health inequalities these communities continue to face, and the importance of improving access to care.

We’re also proud to see work in north east London recognised nationally, with the North East London Cancer Alliance, along with Friends, Families and Travellers, and the Roma Support Group, who have been shortlisted for an NHS Excellence Award for improving cancer screening and early diagnosis for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities!

Is your child protected against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox?

Just one vaccine can help protect your child from four serious illnesses.

The MMRV vaccine is a safe way to keep children protected as they grow.

These illnesses can spread easily and, in some cases, they can be life-threatening.

πŸ’‘ Not sure if your child is up to date?

You can:
πŸ“• Check their Red Book
πŸ“ž Contact your GP practice
πŸ“… Book to have their vaccine so they are fully protected.

It’s never too late to catch up.

Speak to your GP if you have any questions.
