Yesterday we had our latest East Ecclesfield Get to Know Session at the Commercial Chapeltown. Thank you, Paul, for allowing us to use your premises. Luke Goddard for Birley, you like eating establishments for your sessions. We like hostelries.
Thank you to Jenny, Richard, Julie, Mark, Lisa, John Booker for the Stocksbridge & Upper Don Ward and Joyce, for joining us, especially on a Bank Holiday Saturday and staying almost 90 minutes. Your commitment to improving people's lives in our ward is exemplary.
I arrived early, but John Booker for the Stocksbridge & Upper Don Ward had beaten me to it and had already noted three issues that need addressing.
The state of our roads, especially, yes you've guessed correctly, Station Road and also Thornbrook Gardens was a major topic of discussion. Last week the motorway was shut and the diverted traffic was using Station Road. Sadly, cars, vans and lorries were speeding down the road.
Suggestions to help safety were made, such as Smiley Activated Message (SAM) signs. That is a good idea.
Access to the entrance and exit to Chapeltown park also needs a pedestrian crossing.
I have noted these and will raise cases.
John Booker for the Stocksbridge & Upper Don Ward explained that we are subject to the Amey PFI contract for road maintenance, but cases have been raised and expedited.
I have done another video of Station Road and since I did the previous one, 7 weeks ago, it has deteriorated.
When I was selling Disaster Recovery Systems we accessed risk by two factors:
Likelihood of risk happening.
Impact if risk did occur.
Both are HIGH.
I will continue to escalate, using Marie Tidball MP's recent publicity and that of the new Council Leader Fran Belbin. Strike while the iron is hot.
There was a big discussion on how Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham seemed to have regenerated their cities better than Sheffield.
We discussed Reform's Green Belt policy, which is unequivocal and without duplicity:
No building at all on any Sheffield Green Belt.
"Not one inch" is our mantra.
The Green Belt campaign groups have done and continue to play a fantastic and valuable role. Our strategy short, medium and long term was explained and appreciated, starting with our Notice of Motion.
Questions asked about the last time the road sweepers were seen on Station Road. Nobody could remember the last time.
ASB was raised around the Chapeltown shop area, where youths are seen congregating.
Another case that I will raise when I meet Ecclesfield Police in early June.
The general feeling is that the word "change" is overly used. As John Booker for the Stocksbridge & Upper Don Ward said, we are not wanting to change anything. We want to keep what we have already and improve it. Lisa and Mark made a great point of how they and others really love living around here. Friendly people, green spaces, unshuttered shop windows. Yes we want what we have, improve it and make it feel safer. We do not want Labour and the Greens taking our Green Belt away.
Naturally, we discussed the national picture, especially Makerfield. It will definitely be interesting.
Next week's session?
Deborah Newton-Nutbrown shall we find a nice spot on Warren Lane?
Thank you to all who attended and John Booker for the Stocksbridge & Upper Don Ward for sharing your vast knowledge and experience.
