⚜️ I believe everyone is already aware of the recent controversy surrounding the Thai television series Scarlet Heart Thailand, which has been filmed using elements of Myanmar’s cultural heritage and traditional aesthetics without giving proper credit to their Burmese origins. Although many people have been extensively discussing the traditional dances, clothing, and accessories depicted in the series, I would like to add a few thoughts on another important subject that deserves further attention: the Thihathana Throne (Lion Throne).
- In Myanmar’s royal court tradition, there is a saying: “Eight Thrones and Nine Golden Palace Halls,” referring to the essential features and regalia of a royal palace. The eight types of thrones are the Thihathana Throne (Lion Throne), Bhamaraythana Throne, Padumathana Throne, Hanthathana Throne, Gajathana Throne, Sankhathana Throne, Migathana Throne, and Mayurathana Throne. The nine Golden Palace Halls are the Mye Nan Palace, Hluttaw Hall, Glass Palace Hall, Western Zetawun Hall, Eastern Zetawun Hall, Byae Hall, Letthas Hall, Southern Samok Hall, and Northern Samok Hall. Traditionally, each palace hall had its own throne. However, because the Thihathana Throne was installed in both the Mye Nan Palace and the Hluttaw Hall, there were only eight distinct types of thrones across the nine palace halls. Each of these eight thrones differed in its design and craftsmanship. They varied in the types of wood used, their carved shapes, the intricacy of their sculptural details, and their decorative ornaments. Among these eight types, the Thihathana Throne, or Lion Throne, was the most prominent and held particular significance for successive Burmese kings throughout Myanmar’s royal history.
