Under the theme „Human Trafficking in Transition: New Challenges - New Responses“, this year’s Vienna Conference will focus on the challenges of tackling human trafficking in the digital age. Last week, the Austrian Embassy hosted a presentation around Elfriede Jelinek’s work “Rechnitz”. The evening brought together guests and supporters to help raise funds for the opera project “Rechnitz or The Shooting Party”, which is based on Jelinek’s work and confronts the memory of the 1945 Rechnitz massacre.

Keep an eye out for a touch of an Austrian flair on tonight’s Great British Bake Off 🇦🇹🍰

This year’s Great British Bake Off features Vienna-born Yannis, a paediatric doctor based in London. His baking has been shaped by a mix of culinary traditions, from Bangladeshi family recipes to Austrian classics!

We wish him lots of success as the new series begins tonight at 8pm! 🇦🇹🇬🇧

Yannis is challenging the stigma that Bangladeshi men don’t belong in the kitchen, one pastry at a time! Working in a busy NICU, he loves how a cake can bring joy to the ward and has won over the nurses with his bakes. Born in Vienna before moving to London aged 11, Yannis’ baking has been influenced by many food cultures. His first baking memory is making bhapa pitha with his grandmother, while his school days introduced him to classic Austrian treats. Watching Bake Off also helped Yannis learn English, making the show especially close to his heart. Outside the kitchen, he is also a bhangra dancer, and his wedding shimmy has become legendary! For Yannis, baking and medicine have a lot in common: both are about caring for people.

The Austrian flag!

A British cavalry officer depicted in a painting which was given to the Embassy by the Queen’s Dragoon Guards, the Cavalry Regiment of Wales and the Border Counties, with a special Austrian connection... In 1896, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria was appointed Colonel-in-Chief, and their Regimental March is still the Radetzky March to this day!
