This is an English translation of the SvU - Socialism from Below’ statement on the election results in Sachsen-Anhalt and the surge in support for the fascist AfD
In the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, the AFD achieved a record result. The AFD benefitted from the deep unpopularity of the Federal Government and in particular of Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Saxony-Anhalt is the poorest federal state. Voter turnout in recent decades has always been lower than the national average.
In this election, voter turnout has increased significantly. With its appearance as a "system opposition" to the "old parties", the AFD has managed to mobilise voters who had hopelessly stayed at home in the last elections.
"Money for Germans"
The Federal Chancellor's CDU, on the other hand, crashed and lost almost half of its voters. Merz and the CDU have contributed to this development themselves with their social reduction and the incitement against migrants.
In the election campaign, the AFD has addressed social issues, such as the sharply increased price of gasoline. With a poor population in a rural area and poorly developed public transport, this was an important issue.
The phrase used most often in the election campaign and on election night was that of the necessary "policy change".
The AFD was also able to score with racism among many voters. "Money for Germans" was an important slogan in their appearances, which was linked to the campaigns of the media and the government against migration.
Street N***s all over Germany will feel encouraged by the electoral success of the AFD to put their inhumane policies into practice.
Merz halves the CDU
Merz had claimed to want to "halve" it with his content-related to the racism of the AFD. Now it turns out that he has doubled them – and halved the CDU.
Another reason for the strong result of the AFD was its positioning against armament and warmotion. The AFD was able to score with its rejection of war preparation against Russia. She has presented herself as a "peace party".
However, the AFD voted together with the other parties on concrete decisions, such as the vote on the gun factory in Sangerhausen. But this has only come to the public in this case because there is a movement on the ground against the decision.
Broken Promises
In the election campaign, the AFD strongly relied on an "East German identity" and used the slogan of the revolution of 1989, "We are the people". She thus expressed the disappointment at the breaking of the promises of politics of the time and today.
The AFD benefitted from the fact that the party, which expressed this sentiment in the 1990s and 2000s, the then PDS and today's LINKE, made no attempts in Saxony-Anhalt to show itself as a "system opposition".
As long as there is no strong movement against the social reduction of the federal government, against the racism of the government and the media, against the attempts of the bosses to turn the crisis on our backs - as long as the N***s of the AFD will be the main profiteers of the crisis of capitalism.
