Content Note: Brief mention of su***de, eating disorders and trauma

My name is Nathalie. I'm a third-year physics student, about to graduate with a BSc. This is also my fifth year as an undergraduate student, as I have spent two years of my student life in hospitals and residential treatment centres for suicidal depression, trauma, an eating disorder, and a recently diagnosed autoimmune disease.

My trajectory throughout my degree has not been quite what I had anticipated going into it as a fresh-faced 18-year-old, but I have made the best of it. My time spent in treatment has gifted me with the level of empathy and understanding that is required for this role. I have met many people with different backgrounds and needs, and I have had the opportunity to advocate for them as an elected patient representative at two different treatment programmes. As part of my treatment, I have also received extensive education on proactive wellness, psychoeducation, and interpersonal effectiveness, all of which would benefit me greatly in this role. As deputy president of welfare, my mission will be to:

Combat isolation during COVID by teaming up with the RSPCA and bringing shelter animals to halls. Improve safeguarding for sexual violence survivors by collaborating with the College to create a clear set of guidelines for how to protect students. Promote a culture of inclusivity and wellness in our Clubs, Societies and Projects by training and appointing a Wellness Officer to every CSP.

Here is my answer to an excellent question that was asked at Hustings that I unfortunately did not have the time to address. I hope this helps to clarify my stance on this issue. If not, feel free to reach out in my DMs and I'll be happy to explain further!

Up to 45% of female athletes and 19% of male athletes develop eating disorders. This makes it so important to make sure that our sports societies are receiving adequate support. Having a trained welfare officer in each CSP will help make a difference.

The prevalence of disordered eating and eating disorders vary from 0-19% in male athletes and 6-45% in female athletes. The objective of this paper is to present an overview of eating disorders in adolescent and adult athletes including: (1) prevalence data; (2) suggested sport- and gender-specific....

This is my Emotional Support Animal Nyanya (the Floof) and her brother Tigris (the non-Floof). They have made my personal recovery journey so much easier, especially during quarantine and lockdown. I’m going to detail their numerous antics over the next few days to demonstrate how bringing shelter animals into halls can have a wonderful effect on decreasing isolation and improving students’ mental health!

This is not okay. And sadly it is true for so many young women at Imperial. I want to make sure that no matter what happens, you will never be alone. Everyone deserves to feel safe and supported.
