Stop the Berko 750 - Latest Update!
Last night Liberal Democrat councillors, including a Berkhamsted councillor, proposed to extend the deadline to finalise the legal agreement with the developer Taylor Wimpey to build 750 houses on Berko green belt into next year. Conservative councillors blocked this move and limited it to the end of this year. The Conservative councillors argued, and other councillors supported them, that if the legal agreement can't be agreed within a one month extension of its original deadline, the whole planning application's approval should be reconsidered.
This legal agreement, what's called the Section 106, finalises all of the details of the development, and most significantly, roads and traffic, schooling impacts, healthcare provison, water and sewage, and environmental measure. Despite having approved the application a year ago, there's been no effort by the council to consult with residents on any of these key issues. The Conservative councillors action last night seeks to get this application back to the start so that all the issues and concerns raised by Berkhamsted residents, its Town Council, The Chiltern Society and its community groups such as BRAG and the Berkhamsted Citizens Association, along with the 1400 plus objections that were submitted against the application last year, can be properly addressed.
Sign our petition and voice your opposition to this mega development that will destroy our Chiltern green belt and change our town's unique historical chraracter forever. The fight goes on!
